I updated the tool I wrote so that it can directly communicate with the #Crumar #BIT99 via #MIDI sysex. It can download a single patch or all the 1-99 patches of the instrument. It is a console program written in C for macOS, as I don't have the time to write a full-fledged window-based user interface, but I tried to keep it nice to use nonetheless. #synth #sysex #music

I wrote a small tool in C to interpret the #SYSEX files for the #Crumar #BIT99 and #BIT01. It's handy as you can inspect how a certain patch is configured (DCO1 and 2, VCF, LFO1 and 2 etc). I even found an error in the BIT99 manual: the bit order of certain parameters is reversed! The little tool is still quite rough around the edges, but it begins to work.

I tried to do some sound design on the #Crumar #Bit99 and got some interesting string patches with long attack and release. I tried to improvise some chords on a dorian-like context with the #Arturia Drumbrute Impact drum machine. @synx508@bsd.network I read that there’s an alternative firmware available that greatly improves MIDI implementation to control sound parameters. Maybe it’s worth trying. In any case it’s a beautiful synth and the keyboard is really good. Probably better than my current master keyboard 🥰

@synx508@bsd.network I fell into the rabbit hole of the Italian synth of the Marche region a few months ago as I discovered that my GEM S2 was part of it. I LOVE analog hardware and when I searched for an affordable polysynth I noticed that the #BIT98 was affordable yet extremely interesting 😍

@chorist I love the Proteus/2, it's one of my favorite modules, I have mine since 1996. I had to repair a few cracked solder joints, but it still work like a treat along with a Proteus/1 and an Alesis Microverb 4.

@eg0n@corteximplant.com I was searching specifically for an analog polysynth that had good sound, at least 6 voices and a decent MIDI support. The Juno 106 was way too expensive. Then, I was ill for some weeks and I had time to pass while I was in bed, so I fell into the rabbit hole of relatively obscure Italian synths. I found very interesting the Elka EK22, but the offers were too expensive (probably because of the Synthex). So I searched other producers and Crumar was an obvious choice.

@rstevens we also used to be happy when a new version of a software came out. It had new features you can use for doing something useful!

@eg0n@corteximplant.com I played it in my spare time for a week and it is truly amazing! I love it. The interface is quite simple and the schematic with the legend of the different parameters helps. However you can not change them live. Apparently there’s a new version of the firmware that makes them accessible via MIDI CC. The BIT did not have a lot of success at the time and this probably explains why it is not outrageously expensive now.

@f_dion@mastodon.online I’ve used it for a week and it is really amazing! I could have it for a very reasonable price, probably because it’s not very well-known and it hasn’t been very successful in 1985. With some external effects the sound is incredible. I will certainly use it in my music!
