Him: well what's your big brain idea to eliminate food assistance fraud?

Me: universal food assistance

Him:

Me: because there wouldn't be a system to cheat, everyone would just get a check

Him: and who does that benefit?

Me: family farmers and human beings who rely on food for nutrition

Him: what about rich people?

Me: what about them?

Him: you would give them food assistance too?

Me: that's what universal means

Him: you can't do that

Me: yesterday you said I couldn't tax them and now you won't let me feed them either?

Him: they can afford food

Me: then it should be fine to tax them

Him: but if you tax them they won't have as much money

Me: I'm willing to offer universal food assistance

4 years ago I convinced the HOA board to leave the leaf litter for the insects to winter in.

Now every summer we have so many fireflies.

New guy just moved in and asked if he should rake up the common areas.

A literal child stood up to say that he shouldn't because they will not have summer fireflies if he does.

So proud of the little one starting to advocate for the world they want to live in.

6 years told and already learning how to get things done.

The leaves will stay.

The counter girl hopped right up when I walked in and was clocking in to help me.

Me: were you on break? I can wait until it's over I'm not in a hurry.

Her: no, we're supposed to clock out when there aren't customers

Me: oh no, honey, no. That's illegal.

Her: 😳

Me: not for you, for your manager or whoever told you to do that.

Her: it is?

Me: it's called wage theft when your boss doesn't pay you what you earned. when your boss requires you to stay here, he needs you pay you for your time.

Her: oh.

Me: here, this is the office number to an employment lawyer, call her and tell her you need to come in to talk about this

Her: I don't have any money

Me: we're gonna get your money, you already earned it sweetie.

@Urban_Hermit@mstdn.social It's ridiculous to me that we have the ability to feed everyone and we won't because a bunch of people that aren't rich are so worried about the few who are. If capitalism requires hungry kids, I don't need it.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net I'm not the most policy wonkiest but I think we could defund a lot of things and move that money into food aid, and raise the amount of people eligible on an ongoing basis until we got to everyone. It could take up to a decade to fold everyone in but we would continually be making the police state weaker to get the money. Nobody wants to live in a police state anyway.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net I like what you're saying and believe you already probably know this but I'm obnoxious so I'm just hopping in to say this sounds analogous to the "Alternative Minimum Tax" it's not exactly the same but if you're not familiar you may want to look it up as it could be a shortcut to them understanding the fundamental idea of progressive taxation and an extra tax in specific situations. Edit: more context, I'm a communicator by trade and spirit and was not intending to sound any kind of way but that kid in class that won't shut up, apologies if I didn't get the tone correct. @CaptMorgan@freeradical.zone

Sometimes they will have to pay you 2x or 3x what they stole depending on circumstances and how egregious their actions were. (He's also probably going to get in trouble with the IRS for not doing his employment taxes right, but that's a separate thing from the wage theft. Only commit one crime at a time 🙃) All of this is mostly just going to cost him money though
