Another amazing moth by the porch light, and another Sphinx moth!
This one is in genus Smerinthus, the Eyed Hawkmoths. Likely Smerinthus ophthalmica, the Western Eyed Sphinx

I wish I could properly convey the sheer volume and variety of pollinators on this rabbitbrush. Of course I paid it a visit without my Big Camera
Probably at least 30 different species on it at once? Bees of all sizes and colors, wasps, moths, flies of all kinds, beetles, and every kind of mimic and imitator in-between

we signed up for Home Chef for a few weeks to try some new things out in a somewhat hectic time where having nicer meals prepped like this has been very helpful
it's been interesting -- it seems like baking bread has helped a lot with my confidence in the kitchen in general. cooking stuff that is way more complex than I've ever done before and it feels nice.
getting some great ideas for what to try on our own without a "meal kit" as well

The larger elderberry seedling (in the first photo) is a bit droopy, and I think that's because it was growing in a pretty shady spot. Hopefully it will perk up a bit, eventually.
Both were located along a fence line, which of course reminds me of a saying that I first heard in Louisiana: the best way to grow an elderberry from a seed is through a bird
Now I know it wasn't intended this way, but my MIL sending me a family photo from before I was part of the family does ~feel~ vaguely threatening
The observation period for this year's #CItyNatureChallenge has officially begun!
You may have a half a day or so depending on where you are, but this year's observation period is April 24 - April 27 (this Friday - Monday).
Hopefully your region is participating, but if not, you can still participate in the global efforts to observe as much wild nature as you can this weekend!
The uploading and identification period is April 28 - May 10.
