@devsimsek @metin Nice article! I agree that Gitea is currently the best choice for a private git server. I've been running my own Gitea instance for over six years with no issues at all. Gitea also has good funding, so it's probably not going to die any time soon. I see this as a plus, unlike the creators of Forgejo...

@devsimsek @metin Exactly! It's similar to Nextcloud and not OwnCloud, so that the community benefits 👍

@metin@graphics.social @gamesthatwerent@mastodon.world That's really cool! Becoming part of meme culture is like the internet’s version of a knighthood! 😁👌 Well, at least I can say that I did #MoonChild memes before they became that popular 😜

@strigga_ @malteengeler Completely agreed! 👍 As a concluding note, this scenario is no longer theoretical. The recent acquisition of VMware (with a market share of over 70% for virtual infrastructures) by Broadcom led to price increases of between four and eight times, and involved a great deal of arbitrariness. Many were unable to migrate away from VMware's products, and in fact migrated more services to them in order to account for the increased costs, thus justifying Broadcom's strategy. Have a nice week too!

@metin@graphics.social That's one of the scariest articles I've read in a while. It's basically the same story as with backdoors in fundamental open-source components, such as the xz utils backdoor in 2024. However, most people do not realise how dangerous and critical these issues are. Given how widely used WordPress is, particularly among non-techies, and how easily malicious code can be introduced via plugins, this is particularly concerning.

@strigga_ @malteengeler I agree that flexibility is a valid selling point for cloud providers, but this comes at an extra cost. People often claim that the cloud is cheaper outright, but this is simply not true. In my opinion, the vendor lock-in isn't worth it and creates a lot of uncalculable risks.

@strigga_ @malteengeler In fact, running your own infrastructure stack is cheaper in the long run. However, the immediate costs and limits of short-term scalability often drive people towards public clouds. While these are valid concerns, I often hear people (at least in Germany) saying things like "if it's free, it cannot be good" or "we must pay for a better or more reliable solution". In a capitalist world, this way of thinking is to be expected, and it's one of the biggest obstacles to digital sovereignty IMO 😬

@metin Great find, Metin! I looked through the table of contents and it looks very useful 👍 Gaining knowledge of math and computer science concepts early on is extremely helpful, as these skills are required before the relevant courses begin, which can take months or even years. My university offered special courses in both subjects in the first semester, and I'm extremely glad they introduced them shortly before I started. It's good to have a well-designed book that everyone can use!

@proscience I see what you mean. But people who have never done anything practical or useful in their lives and have always relied on money don't seem like much of a threat to me 😉 @metin

@metin @proscience Don't we already have something like this? I think they're called "Starship" and "Blue Origin". But they're not shaped like a foot, they're shaped like... another part of the body 😏

@metin@graphics.social It's a nice idea, but in its current form, it draws a lot more attention to the ads (at least when they're bright enough) 😂 Maybe the ads could be replaced with fine art 🤔

@rothko@beige.party @protonprivacy@mastodon.social AI is here to stay because the technology is far too useful. So we should be thinking about how to improve it and fix what has gone wrong so far. Cynicism won't get us there. Almost anything can be done if there's a will to do it. But claiming that there is no way to do something is, of course, more convenient...

@protonprivacy@mastodon.social Thanks for this interesting article. I agree that this is inevitable, and people would have to be very naive to think otherwise. Online services are easy to use and are already used by a large part of the world's population. This makes it even more important that we think about how to make the use of AI safe, ethical, private, and environmentally friendly. Otherwise, future AI will continue to be none of these things. Whether we like it or not, AI is here to stay.

@strigga_ @malteengeler That's exactly why IT departments with a sense of responsibility should host this on their own infrastructure. Open-source software such as OpenStack (on which the Schwartz group's entire cloud infrastructure runs btw) makes this possible and straightforward.

@andreintg@mastodon.gamedev.place @metin@graphics.social I totally agree. Since I started using Nomad Sculpt, I haven't used any SDF tools. Using a tablet and pen on my couch is far more convenient than sitting at my desk with a mouse. Although SDF modelling is still more beginner-friendly, Nomad Sculpt does a great job of making 3D modelling and sculpting accessible. Like Metin, I also think that Unbound stands out and has its own niche. We can currently see that game development is shifting from traditional engines to all-in-one game dev tools that are easier to learn and use, such as Roblox and Fortnite. However, SDF modelling makes it even easier to create your own assets. With Dreams on PlayStation having been discontinued, Unbound is unique in this respect.
