I guess downloading a Linux package delays the point of risk to after the actual installation but it's not like people decompile & inspect any software.
It's not about "curl | sh", but rather the risk of using upstream-provided packaging.
If you install software from your distro's repos, then you only need to trust the developers of this distro not to be malicious or incompetent. And if you think the developers can be malicious or incompetent, then you shouldn't use such distro.
