I've been (re)learning microcontroller development recently. This time, using #rust #RustLang !

Embassy (a no-std async framework) feels like a superpower! Highly recommend. :blobcatthumbsup:

It even fits on my suuuuper underpowered Arduino UNO.

@rossgrady As it turns out, business owners never wanted to be job creators, and, if given the chance, they would just stop.

Some time in the last several months, I kind of gave up on Mozilla as an organization. I've been pretty dissatisfied with the direction Firefox is heading in, so I decided to try out other browsers. Vivaldi seems nice. I've stuck with that one for a while now.

But switching my daily driver browser means a bunch of my Web apps that were designed as browser extensions for Firefox apparently need a lot of work to get ported to Chrome and its descendants.

Web standards do a pretty good job of making all the browsers show web pages in roughly the same way, but hooooo boy do the standards really break down when it comes to web extensions! :blobcatnotlikethis:

Even just super basic stuff. Some browsers call the main API entry point `browser`. Other browsers (who shall remain nameless) call it `chrome`.

On the more esoteric end, some browsers pass messages between processes using basically JSON as a wire format, and others use a fancier method called structured cloning. And there's no signal to tell what a browser's going to do there (some browsers even do different things depending on configuration!), so you need to FAFO at runtime to figure out what works.

Browsers can't even agree on what the unique identifier for an extension should be and have come up with * wildly * different methods for choosing it.

The porting work has been a bit of a pain. But I think I have most of it figured out now.

@CodingItWrong@oldbytes.space I haven't updated my VSCode instance for over a year now because I'm terrified of what enshittifications have been building in that time. Maybe I should finally give vscodium a try.

Ooof, AI slop makes account signup statements completely useless now as a filter. What's an admin to do anymore.

@soatok@furry.engineer working in academia is looking better and better these days. The pay sucks, but the quality of life is excellent! Tragically, there are so few of these positions available.

@musicmatze I *yearn* for the day when I can put my code on a self-hosted forgejo instance and also not have to create a new account when I want to interact with someone else's. Although, the whole AI-scrapers-absolutely-demolishing-code-forges thing definitely adds another pain factor to self-hosting.

@rossgrady Stuff like this makes me want to hang on to my 2008 Honda for a long as I possibly can. I'm not sure I even need a car anymore, but I'm terrified to sell it because It's not possible to get anything like it again. I think the era of buying cars that don't do evil is far behind us now.

@slatian@pleroma.envs.net Mostly? But yes. I had to do some extra work to make a timing driver, but I eventually got an async version of the hello world blinky LED program to run.
