A reminder from Dr. Richard Hamming, computer visionary.
Found a big jar of slime on the kitchen counter.
The resident professor claims it’s a kombucha starter gifted by a doctoral student.

Pleasing words from the last couple days, one encounters too seldomly.
So. Snow. We meet again.

The veil of ignorance is being pulled away by big data and more sophisticated risk modeling. This is likely to erode societal and fiscal policy rationales that play a key role in today’s shared risk pooling.
“Who breaks a butterfly on a wheel?”
This rabbit hole did not disappoint:
It ended with poetry.
Satire -> Alexandre Pope -> William Shield -> The Auld Lange Syne Controversy > Rosina -> (listened a bit to Rosina on YT) -> (returned to Alexandre Pope) -> John Hervey-> Suetonius -> Castration -> The Glorious Revolution > Deposition of James II -> The Dunciad -> “Still Dunce the second rules like Dunce the first" -> An Essay on Criticism -> Heroic couplet-> Nabokov ->
“And then black night. That blackness was sublime.
I felt distributed through space and time: One foot upon a mountaintop. One hand
Under the pebbles of a panting strand,
One ear in Italy, one eye in Spain,
In caves, my blood, and in the stars, my brain …” (Pale Fire, Nabokov)
KOREA: "one people, one nation, two governments" is over.
North Korea is reportedly dropping theoretical unification clauses from its constitution after 70+ years.
This isn’t all good news:
“… analysts said this did not necessarily indicate an end to Pyongyang’s aggressive rhetoric against its southern neighbour …Christopher Green, a senior consultant at the International Crisis Group added ‘Normal states define their adversaries in defence white papers and defence reviews and the like; they do not define their adversaries in the constitution.’ “

A terrifyingly great line from the small screen:
“Go ahead, dispossess yourself of all your laws. If you tear down your own house to persecute me, I rejoice.”
