Counterpunch Font Editor

1/4

Introducing Counterpunch, a next-generation font editor that runs directly in your browser.

Inspired by the counterpunch, a traditional punch-cutting tool from the metal type era, this modern digital type design tool introduces vital concepts such as full bidirectional complex script shaping, in-place component editing, code-driven dynamic glyph filters, and a digital assistant that streamlines everyday font engineering tasks.

For those who have grown weary of the repetitive edit-compile-test cycle of traditional font editors, Counterpunch offers a welcome solution.

I think Counterpunch is going to launch with live cloud collaboration from the beginning.

It's not a very feature-rich experience yet, but the basics are working live across machines, operating systems, and the internet.

Google Docs or Figma but for fonts.

Counterpunch comes packed with many experiences that are novel to font editors.

The glyph overview alone has enough to unpack them separately.

Today’s focus is on the Matrix Mode.

This first clip focusses on in-place component editing and 100% OpenType-compliant bi-directional font rendering; the assurance that your font will always behave the way it looks in the editor, because **it is a real font that you’re seeing**.

This eliminates the tedious edit-compile-test cycle of existing workflows.

Although today not unique to Counterpunch anymore, as with Fontra a second open-source editor also announced the feature in the same week, remarkably, albeit with some differences in user experience and technical implementation.

RE: @kai@typo.social

This fascinating research just dropped and it totally vindicates Counterpunch’s AI approach:

An AI-assisted Python script generator that offers the same level of flexibility and introspection that manually written deterministic Python automation offers, yet it’s written by an assistant using your own natural language.

It can visualize, filter glyphs in the glyph overview, and answer any question that the Python object model is able to answer, while keeping your data completely private and scripts reusable — literally the best of both worlds.

Here’s a longer article about it: https://counterpunch.space/articles/ai-assistant-privacy-and-design

I’m planning to offer the assistant for other font editors asap so users can leverage this without switching their preferred environment.
