After 30+ years in the fandom, I'm running into a problem. It kinds feels like I've played the entire game through from start to finish.

And the end game content, the Level 100+ stuff, is becoming either incredibly tough, or completely unaffordable.

I used to collect art but now I have boxes full of it and never look at it again. E621 has like 10000 posts per day. I've bought all the T-Shirts, prints, and all the community-affirming knicknacks, and I've grown mostly numb to it. Commissioning a new badge icon just doesn't spark much joy any more.

I have two main furry related hobbies left that have displaced everything else in my life, and I'm at my limits to what I can achieve. And on the material side, the kind of merchandise, art and toys I would still like to have is completely unaffordable to me.

I also really like the big cons a lot, cause that's the league I'm playing in. But I can't afford to travel to different continents multiple times a year. Local meets are nice, but increasingly out of my age group / friend bubble.

So yeah, I'm in a bit of an identity crisis at the moment.

By the way, the reason this happens is because three FDP affiliated politicians created a company (So Done GmbH) that turned this into a business model. They say their goal is "to cancel hatespeech", but really, they're just monetizing it.

It's basically a subscription service. Their AI based crawler will find actionable "insults" against you, and auto-sue everyone involved for compensation. The money will then be shared between the politician and this company.

This creates completely perverse incentives.

So, my commission request for was just declined. I kinda knew I had very low chances, but here's something that grinds my gears:

There is something profoundly more frustrating about "artist choice" commission openings. Where you apply, and they choose base on what they like ... and while that's kinda always the case, even if not officially stated, running it as a competition between applicants is just so humiliating. Now it no longer feels just like bad luck that you didn't get a slot. Now it's because you were not GOOD ENOUGH. Try better next time!

I guess my taste just sucks and my ideas are so unimaginative, and it's just my fault that my imagination is so dull it's not worthy consideration. And even if it's not really like that, running your commish opening like a contest does make me FEEL like that.
