Wir waren gestern bei den Funkamateuren in Freiburg (A05), wo Karl-Heinz Krawczyk (DL1GKK) einen Impuls-Vortrag über Meshcore gehalten hat:

Das Thema stieß auf positive Resonanz und wir planen einen Workshop zum Bau von Repeatern und Companions im den kommenden Wochen (aber erst nach den Pfingstferien). Ein Repeater wird dann auch am Flugplatz installiert.

Ein Ex-Teammitglied hat sich heimlich die Marke „MeshCore" gesichert. Plan: das offene Projekt zu seinem eigenen, closed-source Produkt umbauen. Einfach umbenennen und weiterziehen? Falsches Signal. Dann lernt jeder Trittbrettfahrer: Open-Source-Maintainer kann man aus ihrem eigenen Projekt bullyen, wenn man nur dreist genug ist. Das Kernteam wehrt sich rechtlich - kostet aber ~18.000 USD an Anwaltskosten. Wer was übrig hat: jeder Betrag hilft, ein offenes Projekt vor genau dieser Art von Bullying zu schützen. @kimschulz@social.data.coop I just don’t think that Meshcore and Reticulum are comparable. They have different approaches and use cases. I would compare Meshcore to PMR443 radios and Reticulum to cellular mobile network (with regards to complexity and possible applications, not technology-wise).

@kimschulz@social.data.coop „The Freemium Friction“ is also just wrong… there is open source companion software available (meshcore-Open for example) and as far as the official Meshcore app is concerned, there is just a delay to the repeater config, the feature is NOT blocked entirely.

@kimschulz@social.data.coop „they (Companions) only speak directly to Repeaters.“ - that’s not entirely correct… companions can talk to each other when in range and you can also configure them to act as repeaters for a more Meshtastic way of working, but on another frequency as the main mesh network.

@kimschulz@social.data.coop I can talk to companions directly even when kilometers away. And yes, if people don’t contribute to the network by setting up repeaters, but rely on only one repeater closely, then this repeater is a SPOF for that area. But if there are multiple repeaters, then the network becomes resilient, and the path finding protocol used for direct messages, repeater admin and room servers helps to prevent congestion.

@kimschulz@social.data.coop I do, yes, the other one uses a T-1000E, so no good antenna. It’s based on LoRa, it can work in environments with harsh noise floor. I don’t see the point of this argument: No LoRa/radio based solution works beyond the limits of physics…
