@sylvia_ritter@mastodon.social Your more recent blending of 3D modeling and your traditional style of painting is an interesting change to see play out. You always put in a ton of work, and this one is another great job. Thanks for sharing!

@foone@digipres.club Surely it's fine, you just have to go to their homepage (not linked from that repo's main page), bypassing the list of vendors (and the 404'ing DIY assembly link), skip the "Getting Started" links to find the link to the Safety Rules (not linked on any of the Getting Started pages as far as I can tell) to find that the "Espressif Firmware for OpenShock, Controlling shock collars" should under no circumstances be used with devices worn near a neck. 😐

@kit@sharkey.kitredgrave.net Not sure how to deal with "small", but surely winning the lottery and using that to become influential allows you to prevent larger scale catastrophies. (And, subsequently, run headlong into a variety of time-based paradoxes.)

@kit@sharkey.kitredgrave.net I agree, more or less, though I'm curious about whether you think they've meaningfully changed, or your impression of them has changed: to me, they've ~always been easier to manage than sysvinit and I never really understood the complaints. They've incrementally improved, but is there a specific thing that has made you feel better about them?

@phildini You probably also want to enable secret scanning on the org level if possible, and Zizmor if you use GHA. Unfortunately, I haven't found a good guide to all of the useful things though, and of course any set of recommendations will always have people who disagree. (i.e. I wouldn't put as much emphasis on SBOM as OpenSSF does, etc.)

@phildini In larger or more distributed projects, it can be easier than hoping everyone involved has good hygiene around their accounts, so there's some value in it. And given infinite resources, sure, go for it. But for most people, I think you'll have a better cost/benefit ratio from other things, like tightening up CI, cleaning your environment up, locking down your production servers, auditing account access, etc.

I remain convinced that Ink & Switch (https://inkandswitch.com/) is doing some of the most interesting and thoughtful work on software interaction, design, and user experience being shown publicly, and the things they're publishing are wildly underappreciated outside their niche.
(I just hope more of their projects are released as open source and get traction publicly. They're the sort of things that get way better if they're supported by most of the tools you use, and it feels like a narrow window is opening for that.)

@foone@digipres.club Fits a whopping 72×40 = 2,880 pixels, too. At that point, Doom seems like a given. Wonder how long until they have the version where the USB C connector tongue is just the PCB.

@yaelwrites Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds like you've got a variety of other irons in the fire, but it still sucks to get let go. 😞

@stephen@stephenwuebker.social The ban affects two things: starting in 60 (well, now 59) days, you cannot use federal money to buy routers (but see below) produced outside the US, and no such devices will receive new FCC approvals - but that doesn't affect existing models, which remain approved, so no real effect for at least 3-6 months on the consumer side if this even stays in place.
However, "router" in this Notice is any consumer device that moves packets between networks, so basically any networked device.

@stephen@stephenwuebker.social Yeah, it's still a big deal for people who make networking equipment (though I sort of expect them to try for an injunction or to otherwise see the ban revised), but for consumers it'll be a while before it matters. (Though if it stays as-is, it will matter eventually: basically no consumer phone, laptop, or access point really qualifies according to these rules, not to mention Thread / Zigbee / Z-Wave devices that contribute to a mesh, etc.)

@DoctorDeathray It's a tough time in Chicago. I believe in you though, and hopefully things start turning in your direction soon.
