#ScribesAndMakers 7 April: Would your current creative project make a good game?

Uhm, what if one of my creative projects IS a video game? 😅

Another one bites the dust!

The #Philosophy of #Balance calls for your input! After all, it wouldn't be very balanced if I keep basing these posts only on my own stories now, would it? ;)

@europeanspodcast@mastodon.social Personally I take the fact they are slower as a positive. When I go on holiday, I don't want the stress of flying, nor the cramped seats of a plane. Rather, I can take the convenience and pace of the train to unwind and arrive at my destination well-rested.

@jzakotnik @thephpf while that’s sympathetic, how many people do you know who would like to volunteer for a project that gets primarily built for, and built by AI?

@pentup@mastodon.art thanks for that! In that case I think POLDERS might actually make for a lovely infotainment cartoon 😊

@jascha while I agree that it is indeed an overly generalist statement, I don’t think you should dismiss everything someone says after they made a possible mistake. Physicians often don’t want you to know about metaphysics. Biologists often don’t want you to know about endogenetics. Computer scientists don’t want you to understand quantum computers. Scientists are people like everyone else, and they too will often deny what you say based on bias or pass you off like a hot potato.

@thephpf I used to be an advocate for this kind of recognition, but given the advent of AI, I’m afraid I can no longer support this kind of idea. Volunteer work should be a positive thing for society, but open-source development has become a rather contentious thing here, since the main beneficiaries are now society-wrecking billionaires who own the AI models.

@jzakotnik @thephpf yeah, I’m not saying we have to judge it as a black and white thing that applies to all developers. But keeping our eyes on the ball, the question was: should open-source work be recognised as volunteer work? To which I will say that no, it should not. Because the main beneficiaries are no longer the humans seeking to collaborate, but the corporations who benefit from AI at both ends.

@jzakotnik @thephpf oh, I agree such software serves a good purpose, and I would consider that volunteer work too. But I think you’re better off keeping such software closed these days. If another library wishes to use it, you can still share it with them of course. That way, you maintain the human collaboration while not making your efforts feed into the same tech companies that would usurp all libraries if they could.

@crazyeddie @jascha probably the same reason why native developers might not want you to learn about web development… they might fear their career is in jeopardy if another technology overtakes theirs…

@crazyeddie @jascha haha, I’m not saying it goes for all of them, but I’ve run into plenty of such programmers in my career. As for baseless accusations, I guess the shoe fits 😅

The #Philosophy of #Balance is back with another post, one very close to its roots: Objective vs subjective truth.

English: https://philosophyofbalance.com/blog/objective-vs-subject-truth/
Dutch: https://philosophyofbalance.com/blog/nl/objectieve-vs-subjectieve-waarheid/

As usual, reply to this toot to comment on the post.
