Something I had not noticed for, apparently, nearly 2 years (thank you fellow #Snowflakes!) is that #mstdnCA is blocking #Tor.

It is a legitimate choice to reduce certain vectors of risk. Yet here I am, logged in on #TorBrowser.

For me, this is about supporting people who cannot see the uncensored web without a tool like Tor. And it has been personal. So, I am looking to migrate again. I will update here when I decide on a new community. Also, @Amgine@mamot.fr

@Warlockofwires@techhub.social @samir@mastodon.functional.computer Unfortunately, software engineering is more akin to building trades than PE: the area of its applied sciences is very large, not well-defined, and entails a myriad of sub-specialization. That does not mean, like trades or finance, they cannot form guilds and unions to build standards and enforce regulations and ethics. It just means PE will not accept them into the fold.

@georgetakei@universeodon.com @gemelliz@mstdn.ca I would like to remind people that Elbridge Gerry, from whom we get the word “gerrymandering”, was a Democratic-Republican at the time he signed into law the first version - the party from which *both* Democratic and Republican parties descended. Holding your nose and voting for the least-bad candidate is what we keep doing, expecting a different outcome by doing the same thing again.

Hmm, I must have missed an announcement, but I can no longer log in to #mstdn.ca via #TorBrowser - blocked by #CloudFlare, which never loads the challenge.

This is a critical #fail for me.

@afreytes@mastodon.gamedev.place @MayInToronto@mstdn.ca

Because Fedi is eidetic, despite all appearances otherwise.

May_Likes_Toronto: I do the same, all the time. I am becoming of the opinion it is a bad idea to post here. Maybe in some of the variations on the theme of better Diaspora, or other privacy community.

Mostly, though, I would rather indie something with better privacy. Which I think I will do.

@zack@hachyderm.io

I think of it in a slightly different way.

If I block domain.tld, I am not making that decision for everyone in my community. Someone in my community has subscribed to the user who triggered me to check that instance and discover there is nothing redeemable from there in my opinion.

The other thing a domain block does is it prevents anyone from that instance directly seeing content from me. If my toots get boosted, they may see them.

I do not get to make decisions for others.

@samir@mastodon.functional.computer A key qualification was the word "professional". In most places 'programmers' are not members of a professional association with codes of conduct/ethics, nor are there standards of education/training, nor licensure or bond. Which ultimately means the professionals do not know they can refuse unethical/immoral work requirements, nor have they organized to enforce their rights.

@williampietri@sfba.social @Warlockofwires@techhub.social @samir@mastodon.functional.computer Excellent, excellent, point. One can draw two lines, describing three loose 'divisions': logic which works with hardware directly. logic which works within an Operating System. But setting up a SE association must be a benefit to industry and community. History suggests professional associations (PAs) are most likely when they reduce corporate liability when government increases corporate liability. 1/2
