Today I went to the sandbank near Kootwijk. There was a viewing tower that was quite high above ground and I decided to paint from up there. I actually have some fear of heights so this was pretty nerve wracking. Also had to paint with the panel in the shadow all the time so the colours came put a bit funky. But i got it done and I was facing my fears at least.

I was doing quick portrait drawings over the weekend at the local art event space/pub. All of the drawings yesterday were done from people on the street and they took their pictures home. Today, everyone at the space dressed up with medieval clothes and the volunteers and waitresses were sitting mostly. So I was able to at least take some pictures :D I had fun drawing.

Been headhunting again today. I was distracted by how shiny the model’s skin was maybe I should have painted it even shinier. Other than that, form, light all that stuff. I don’t think I enjoy black backgrounds very much anymore. Also, the paint sinks in really fast.

I tried to see if I could tackle this extremely difficult subject. Used a lot of (for me) new techniques, tried out different ways to handle knife and brush to get the marks to create the sort of noise I required. Today I felt somewhat sluggish and went to paint some water lilies. There was a windmill nearby that was famously painted by Monet once, which is probably why they planted those lilies there. Been using the “daluren vrij” ticket to go to Amsterdam today. I went and painted for 10 hours straight, which is a bat ridiculous. But I got a relatively big painting done so that’s good. Trying my luck with sunlit trees again. I am happy with the sporadic markings. Though most of the time was spend deleting details that were distracting/disruptive. It’s still a daunting and impossible subject to paint. I think I should have painted a tree more up close. Today at the portrait I tried to make simpler statements and not go with transitions. Normally I go towards transitions and more details at some point but I tried to hold myself back, trying to optimize my shapes instead. It didn’t go very well yet I think. I will look at some masters that do those better and maybe make better decisions with the next one. I really want to learn this #portraitpainting #painting #oilpainting #mastoart #fediart #allaprima

Today I went to paint the sunday portrait again after intensely painting landscapes for a week. The sitter was a 16 year old girl but even then, they did a good job sitting still enough. Painting the portrait at Dekaai again. It was raining pretty badly which is fine for the painting. But I didn’t bring any raincoat or even a jacket or something so it was quite cold. I have been trying to quickly capture my father’s living room. Happy with how parts turned out, though it’s hard to get a cohesive composition with so many part in it. Also, the glare is quite brutal so it photographed quite poorly. Anyways, I don’t paint lots of interiors, wanted to try it.

@ghostcatte @doombloomart people have always been blaming the lack of materials for the lack of results. It’s funny reading about painters obsessing over some mystical old masters medium or exotic pigment, only to end up with paintings that fall off from the canvases. I agree that the instant publishing option made it a bit of a modern problem too. Nothing wrong with trying to find an audience, but having pleasing them your sole reason to make art is unhealthy. Though thats not new as well.

I want to do a good job for myself, but painting is hard I find.Especially after having a run of decent results, ramming my head into a wall like this is a pretty rough reminder that there is still a lot for me to improve on.

@ashenwave@mastodon.art social media can be tiring and I find the algorithmic addiction mechanisms of the big sites were something I was prone to. I feel more in control here when it comes to consumption. When posting my own work, instagram made the mistake of showing your actual reach, which confirmed my suspicions, that very few people were getting to see my posts. Even among my followers there. The filters are dystopian Here I get feedback and attention from a range of people from all walks of life!

Normally I have a weird setup at home involving a cowboy hat and top down lighting + heavy perspective transformation to make it work. But here theres all these white walls and big windows. Makes it that there is glare from every angle. Woes of being an oil painter I guess.

@doritc@norden.social well, for my standards, it’s stuck in a stage where the proportions, values and colors are keyed inaccurately, thus preventing me to develop light, form and impression. That being my stated goal made painting this frustrating. Art is subjective and so you can’t put an objective label on it of course. However, in the process I continuously look for what is wrong in regards to my intent. And in this case I didn’t even start to get there. Nothing to do with the model btw. She was great.
