@violetmadder I was enamored by Spock and his adoption of Vulcan ideals of logic. The next generation created an entire language for Klingon, but I never hear what the Vulcan native language would be. Would we get a different result if we trained on a logical language?

@susankayequinn @NNN Now that being said, the farmers co-ops tend to be controlled by the biggest farmers, it's just that we keep wealth transfer and extraction local, so co-ops are not necessarily better than well run and forward-looking utilities, like Midamerican Energy was when they were one of the first large-scale wind farm operators in the midwest.

@munin If I do s/LLM/CEO/ (vimspeak for replace LLM with CEO), and the CEO has a Pavlovian programmed response to ignore their own humanity and empathy in service of personal profit, is the result really any different? There are days I think we'd all be better off with AI CEOs and union memberships, because as the union steward I could at least examine the model weight activation of why the AI did what it did. In human CEOs, I can only infer what that motivation might have been, where in an open model with transparent training data, I can mathematically determine what caused a particular token to be generated. Of course, in the current "state of the art" with proprietary models and training data sets, only the nation-state funded hackers really have the means and the motive to go inspecting why an LLM does what it does. Maybe that's not that much different than what the conspiracy theorists have been saying about the ruling class.

@susankayequinn @John_Loader I have pretty much everything at the farm to start doing this except markets to humans who care about rewilding. What would you want to trade to help me get panels installed? What would help me the most is if you come visit and pick up the posts on the way...

@susankayequinn Solar United Neighbors is not operating in Iowa it seems. Do you know anyone you can connect me with there? The biggest immediate problem I have is there is no off the shelf solution to go from TenKSolar panels (48VDC) to a CCS1 DC fast charger port (400-800VDC). All the DC fast charger stuff I've seen only takes AC power input.

@susankayequinn What do you think of https://www.fairlytrained.org as a way to use the tech for better things, like maybe replacing the CEOs with more logical and rational algorithmic decision makers that have a programmable and transparently auditable input for union worker, consumer, and general public input into company decisions? But yeah the "minimize harm" response completely misses the point.

I have so many mixed feelings about this https://www.figure.ai/news/f-02-decommission

On one hand, if you're gonna do something dumb and cinematic with an arc furnace, this is definitely the thing to do.

Now let's be real. If figure is using commercial cloud GenAI models, this statement is a load of astronomically stupefying idiocy:

"Decommissioning a fleet of robots full of custom-built actuators and other intellectual property is no easy task. We needed to dispose of the robots in a way that protected our proprietary hardware."

uh-huh... Tell ya what, let me do a free pen test of some of Figure's infrastructure with access to some unreleased flagship foundation models, and we'll see if I can't go find all that information they all think is so t0p s3kr1t.

Like seriously dude? You could have given those robots to high school kids to take apart and learn from, and then made job offers to every kid who got anywhere close to figuring it out anything you think is so stupidly secret you had to melt down the machine to prevent an escape.

It's already escaped, because your paranoia has blinded you to the question of what the hell are you so paranoid about in the first place.

We love Figure 02. It is an incredible robot.

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-Hidden-Tradeoffs-of-a-US-Diesel-Export-Ban.html

Well I guess if you wanted to end worldwide dependence on oil this would be a good way to do it. I for one welcome our new diesel export ban and follow-on 12% reduction in refinery capacity, oil drilling, and CO2 emissions.

@landley@mstdn.jp The problem I have with *BSD is the license ecosystem just encourages bigger badder actors to do wholesale ingesting of BSD licensed code and strip the copyright and never contribute back to the community. There was one point where GPL enforcement meant you could not just grab the linux kernel and pull an Apple BSD to MacOS makeover and never release any new code.
Maybe the answer here is security updates and proving you have the ability to have humans actually respond to critical zero-days? Does Linux still have this, or is there enough to fork the kernel and require every new driver or patch to have human "signed-off-by", and still keep the mostly theoretical GPL protection, or is there some way to create this kind of ecosystem with a BSD?

Commentor: But are you going to pay me to eat

me: Yes, but this is a 100% on-site position in Iowa building farm robots disrupting the quaint industrial era idea that you have to work for food.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop @NNN@bettercities.top Corn ground can at least be returned to prairie. Once a suburb is built on former farmland, it's never going back. If we at least mandated solar roofs on every new building this might be acceptable for humanity, but development sprawl is still far more devastating for the environment I live in than corn. But we still have the problem of capital investment. Where do I get a forward looking operating loan to start delivering food with an electric truck instead of running our food system on oil? (see https://99finches.com/objects/4a90bbfb-c738-4b3b-92d3-c787459b7056 ) I need the investors, financiers, and people willing to risk a portion of their retirement investments in supporting the people that are actually doing the thing.
