@scy@chaos.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I think we're doing a pretty good job. Honestly there's not much the EU can do about climate change at this point outside of technological advances. The EUs per capita emissions are lower than those of China and the rest of the Western world. With a much smaller population. The EU is nearing 5% of global emissions, and with that global per capita average (might have actually gone below that in 2026), and with a downward trend.

@agajdosi@witter.cz @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu (I.e. every jet coming into the EU from outside it would shove itself full of as much Jet A-1 as it's W&B limits allow it to take, and would not only be emitting more. But the fuel would also generally come from places where refineries operate by lower standards. Most of our Jet A-1 cokes from refineries in France, Germany and the Netherlands which are some of the cleanest and most efficient in the world.)

@jaffathecake There's a serious question to be asked about whether an engine shipping things which the broader standards community is opposed to can still be considered a standards compliant browser.

@agajdosi@witter.cz @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu This isn't really a useful thing to spend your energy on for two reasons:

  1. Aviation is such a luxury product in absolute terms its only a fraction of global emissions. (2.5%, great for virtue signalling, not useful for combating climate change)
  2. Because of the nature of planes, making Jet A1 more expensive in one place just makes planes fuel up more in another place, thereby flying with a less efficient W&B and burning more net fossil fuels.

@jgordon@appdot.net @SpaceLifeForm@infosec.exchange I mean.. If you consider the lower bound estimate of Bitcoin which I believes lies around 20GW average, the 10-ish GW they're talking about isn't that bad :p. And at least this is generating some value.

@yoasif @jaffathecake Sure, I think the PNaCl objections were of a different, less fundamental nature, but yeah, this is a question I've asked myself more often. And sure, humans fundamentally look out for number 1 first. You're not wrong, but some do care about standards, I've been considering blocking Chrome on my own sites. Since they aren't commercial anyway and I don't care if people won't switch browsers in order to access them 🙂.

WTS-Boston Unveils Public Art Celebrating Women in Transportation - Nitsch Engineering

To help raise awareness of women’s contributions to the transportation industry, WTS-Boston today unveiled a 650-square-foot, hand-made, glass mosaic art installation, designed by renowned artist Ellen Harvey. The piece, titled NETWORK, is the result of 12 years of hard work by WTS-Boston and their Public Art Committee, which is co-chaired by Lisa A. Brothers, PE, […]

@libertyoftheforest0 @gabrielesvelto People who threaten people online, 99.99% of the time (probably, as far as I can tell), are exactly the people who barely have the courage to speak up to you in the real world. Let alone try to engage in physical violence. Obviously not saying it can't be incredibly intimidating and frightening when they do. It is absolutely unforgivable that people would say such things to anyone.

I can accept that you didn't actually know much about the Dune universe when you posted this, and that's fair I guess. But in my humble opinion, saying a genocide is understandable because you were bothered by an AI assistant you didn't ask for is still in poor taste.

@igrok @everything I agree they have the potential of becoming much more acute. But currently the societal impacts from the products of AI (large scale misinformation production, fake videos, images, etc.) are vastly larger than the Titans turning AI against the population or acute collapse in labour demand. (Neither unemployment rates nor inflation adjusted salaries are showing concerning trends yet)

@igrok @everything (Yes, I do think transportation services are a great example of where we will see a large decrease in employment, but that's about 5% of total employment and it's easy to imagine other opportunities coming elsewhere. I do agree that this automation wave is more fundamental than previous ones, and in the long term a form of UBI becomes inevitable)

@libertyoftheforest0 @gabrielesvelto So where would you draw the line? And at what age? For say, smoking, alcohol, softdrugs, or other substances that have been scientifically documented to be far more damaging to a teenage brain than the aforementioned, like say, social media :-).

@libertyoftheforest0 @gabrielesvelto What aspect of cognitive development do you believe occurs around puberty that would make that age the right choice? (I mean, I'm not saying I have a better idea, and to be fair I did start doing drugs around the age of 14-15 and I turned out relatively okay. But plenty of my friends I did it with did not, so I'm not sure it was the right choice there either.)

@libertyoftheforest0 @gabrielesvelto Well. You are of course entitled to your views there! I'm not sure I have a particularly strong opinion, this stuff is really difficult to reason through well. But I suspect the democratic consensus is unlikely to land there in many places. 🙂

@libertyoftheforest0 @gabrielesvelto Thank you! I believe the range of views we can hold in good faith is incredibly large and far too often differences in opinion are perceived as malice. And almost always trying to understand each other is more useful in the long run than taking an adversarial position. 🙂

@igrok @everything I mean, historically, overall the US labor marker isn't in a particularly bad place. Even if you look at household income in terms of median housing prices and such. However there is absolutely huge regional differences, particularly caused by extremely high COL. I doubt you'll see significant increase in UBI support until labor shortage. I personally don't think UBI will significantly hurt labor supply, but lots of people believe it does.

@igrok @everything This isn't my experience yet with people around me (but obviously the plural of anecdote isn't fact). And I don't yet see particularly strong evidence for this yet in any of the job statistics in the developed world, movment there can be explained mostly by a general economic slump due to Trump's idiocy. However I could see that changing. And it might change more quickly in extremely overpaid cities like SF/Seattle/Austin/NY/etc.

@igrok @everything As far as I can tell the problem you're describing is that humans are, on average, idiots. I agree with that, but I don't see that as an AI problem. Although I could certainly see Erasmus quoting this as proof for thinking machine superiority. But it's not immediately obvious to me that AI will make these issues worse or better (or neither).
