@codinghorror@infosec.exchange I feel the same way. But the economics of the internet have unfortunately led us to a place where some people earn their livelihood through YouTube ads.
Should they have chosen otherwise and started by spinning up their own subscription- or ad-based service? I mean, maybe? That requires a relatively huge amount of technical know-how, and I expect nearly every one of their subscribers wouldn't have found them had they done that -- people are already hanging out on YouTube, find stuff they like, and subscribe.
I wish there were better mechanisms in place for people to own their content while being capable of having the same reach that they do on the major corporate platforms, especially if this is how they literally pay the bills. My perpetual hope is that things like ActivityPub can accomplish that, but at the moment, it's just not really possible.
It absolutely breaks my heart whenever I see an artist using Instagram as their main or even their only online portfolio.

@jonny I tried this, and it hallucinated a scene of the sun setting over a body of water. I asked it to give me more details, it eventually saw pelicans, a fisherman, etc.
When I told it I hadn’t uploaded an image at all, it refused to believe me. It said “I would like to agree with you, but that would be dishonest. You did in fact attach an image to your second message.”

@codinghorror @caseynewton People have been so focused on the content on these platforms that they are missing the forest for the trees. “People just like checking things,” as I heard it described on a podcast once.
In college at the turn of the millennium we had email terminals at various locations on campus, and I checked my email every chance I got between classes. Usually there wasn’t even anything new.

I get the feeling this exists for people who are forced to use Macs for some reason and don’t like it.

@macsparky I’m in a similar situation; with some trepidation I bought an iMac to replace an aging MacBook Pro, and I love it. My “satellite” device is an iPad Air.
I'm playing through Breath of the Wild again, and I forgot Gleeoks weren't in this one. Not to mention Colgera.
You have to hand it to BotW for being first, but it's amazing how TotK improved on it in every single way.
