I think I've been mostly lucky, but my experiences here at fedi have reinforced my belief that the theory of "People turn into assholes with anonymity" is mostly bs. People who are assholes thrive with anonymity, yes, but folks who are nice and caring keep being so.

I've been sloooowly writing down a Warhammer 40k fanfic thingy, and I finally got the courage (and means) to publish it somewhere.
It follows a group of characters from the Planetary Defense Force, the lowest rung on the Imperial armed forces, as unsettling and strange things happen, while they have to navigate the horrors of Imperial bureaucracy and chain of command.
First chapter published (just after the opening crawl)!

I think the phenomenon fops describe is due to the game being somewhat social, and players expecting each other to be social. Nevertheless, I very much agree with fops' analysis and way to deal with the situation.
I think it is so boring that text in italics gets un-italicized if it is placed amidst other italics. I think it should actually get even more italicized, getting more and more slanted until the whole text consists of ___________.

@LivInTheLookingGlass@transfem.social I can't speak from a position of academic authority, nor of "having lived through it", but basically, it's because the concept of "War" is a bit muddy, especially of a "World War". There have been quite deadly conflicts not classified as Wars (such as the Taiping Rebellion), and even conflicts of a very large geographical scale and importance that were not classified as World Wars (such as the Seven Years' War).
Nevertheless, the Cold War is called like that because the two main belligerants, the USA and the USSR, did not enter in overt direct conflict. They very much were trying to beat one another, but both feared the destructive capabilities that would be wrought upon the world given the advancements in weapons and the sheer number of persons involved in such a conflict. Any estimate of what would happen "if the Cold War went Hot" is genuinely terrifying, even the most optimistic ones.
That meant both sides were trying to beat the other in less direct ways: most famous were proxy wars, that is, intervening in any sort of conflict by providing help to whoever opposed your enemy. Classic examples are the Vietnam and Soviet-Afghan wars. Such conflicts could rapidly turn into very tense affairs, given the fears that one side would escalate the conflict and force the other into responding. The Korean war is such an example in where things got very close of going hot during a proxy war.
But, other ways of one-upping the other were plenty, from the Space race to the Olympics and other sports competitions. Fun fact: Russia and other post-soviet states have such a strong presence in Chess due to cold war animosity!
TL;DR: Defining something as "World War" is difficult, Cold War is long and complex and not overt.

In this Velociraptor's humble opinion, PT has it's flaws, but it is still waaaay better than *waves at the other right-wing parties* that whole mess... Of course, there are other left-wing parties that I very much support, but they are smaller and thus need compromises to get anything done.

@ahrienby @komislava Ah, I don't mean specifically about Netherlands or Poland, it is a phenomenon that happens around the whole world. Fascists used that same "we're a third way out of the tired left-and-right debacle" despite being very much right-wing. That's why I'm always veeery skeptical whenever someone claims to not be politically left nor right.
Bonus: in Brazil, there is a nickname for a block of too-common kind of politician that roughly translates to "The Big center". These politicians are right-wingers, that claim imparciality and only work when bribed, being an effective roadblock to any sort of meaningful progress...
