Open post RedTechEngineer @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link · 10mo ago Replying to @eriner@noauthority.social Postmortem: power issues caused damage to the disk. I fixed it and NAS is back. Nerd postmortem: I pulled and ddrescue'd the disk, ~20MB of unrecoverable data. Hope it wasn't important, haven't looked into what precisely was lost it but postgres isn't complaining (yet), and as long as db data wasn't lost I don't really care. YOLO copied the image to a new disk, adjusted the partition table, fsck'd, NAS is back. This took longer than rolling a backup but had the least amount of total data loss. @eriner that's 160,000,000 missing bits!
Open post RedTechEngineer @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link · 10mo ago Replying to @eriner@noauthority.social @kaas_peeland @eriner yes. High availability for databases is tricky. Ideally I’d have two NVMes in RAID 10 in each box, and 3 boxes for a high availability cluster. But I haven’t taken the time to experiment with switching to cockroachdb. @eriner @kaas_peeland just RAID 0 and don't use any drives that will fail.
Open post RedTechEngineer @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link · 10mo ago Replying to @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link @nikink I get the meme, but in reality American English would actually be closer to being traditional. The Brits had a lot of spelling, grammar, and terminology changes back in the late 1600s through early 1800s that the Americans never went through, and actively resisted by influential and wealthy men like Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster. Our English never got Samuel Johnson'd or rekt by francophillic spelling traditions popular with the scholars back then. @nikink tl;dr american english didn't get simplified, british nerds made their english more complicated
