Programmer, forever Tabletop GM, homebrewer, anticapitalist, linux-user, sometimes a writer and longtime anime-fan. Please feel free to drop me a line - I am pretty curious and tolerant of anyone else who is the same, and I promise I do not bite.

As long as you have an introduction/profile and a couple of posts to get a vibe check, 99.99% of follower requests will be approved. That means if you have no posts I will reject you - nothing personal. I just want the barest of sanity-control.

No solicitation, please.

It’s maddening to read an article on pitfalls the vibe coders are hitting only to realize part way through that the author has ran the article through an LLM.

I hate hitting that uncanny valley effect.

The other left out bit here is that he talks about “raising her”, like the thing is his child.

In his view, this guy is grooming his AI daughter-girlfriend.

_Hey techbros, we doing alright? Sure doesn’t sound like it_

It’s probably unkind of me. But the most annoying thing correspondents dinner shooter is that the correspondents were there. Which results in 20 trillion articles of hand wringing and weird soul searching by people who suddenly care now that it happened near them or people they knew.

I’ll admit people comparing a hantavirus virus outbreak on a cruise ship to COVID precursors are kinda pissing me off.

You know viral outbreaks happen all the time, right? I know we all went through some shit, but could you not try to stoke a panic every time the news reports one of these outbreaks? Thanks.

Reflecting with a friend: Organizing and running Tabletop games has given me a lot of useful career skills.

Almost everything in regards to organization, managing conflict, and leadership I learned and practiced while GMing.

My coworkers are still confused when I ask them to roll initiative in a conflict though.

Before you get too excited about the senate “banning” predictive market trading I think it’s important to look at the context and rule.

The rule itself (grabbed from Morenos site since I couldn’t find it elsewhere yet)

No Member of the Senate may enter into, or offer to enter into, an agreement, contract, or transaction that provides for any purchase, sale, payment, or delivery that is dependent on the occurrence, nonoccurrence, or the extent of the occurrence of a specific event.’’.
First: it talks strictly about members of the senate, and nothing about intent. Which means there are truck size holes.

Secondly: this isn’t a “law” as in part of the United States criminal code. This is an amendment to the “Conflict of Interest” rule of the STANDING RULES OF THE SENATE, ie its self governing ruleset.

That makes this all feel pretty toothless. An invitation to “we investigated ourselves and found no wrong doing”.

I am frustrated that none of the half dozen articles explained any of this.

Everyone always asks for a “favorite” thing but my brain doesn’t really work like that. :neocat_0_0: I can’t say what my “favorite” food is because it’s situational. It’s all situational. Even like … color.

But the concept is so deeply engrained into relation building that I have to fake answers. People get put off if I don’t answer.

Watching rich people pearl clutching and screaming about moving because of wealth taxes is very funny. It’s like reverse gentrification. Oh no, the neighborhood has been changed by developments economically aggressive to you? Wonder what that feels like.

I am sometimes a bit disquieted when people refer to NB people as some combination of girlboy/boygirl. There are definitely people within that spectrum that identify that way, but it seems to exclude those who feel a third way, or people like myself who identify as ... not.

Not that I am asking for a purity test here. I meet people where they are, and I don't think any harm is meant. I've long accepted that my position makes me a curious outlier that sometimes breaks people's brains. Being agender is kinda like being the Bobby Tables or null pointer of the whole gender-identity discussion, and most people are not mentally prepared for your not-thing to be ... a thing.

But now I have some time off. I am not really sure what to do with it, honestly.

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems yeah even up to the early 80s, Oregon and Washington were places racists often considered far enough from the “evils” of the East coast liberals that “true white men” could ‘live in peace’. Thus why people like Robert Mathews showed up. I feel like the thing people don’t realize about the PNW is that the city/rural political divide is VERY stark, and that’s because it’s swing more liberal is relatively new.

@Ragashingo@starside.social I liked the message of this series a lot. I think it suffered from some pacing and narrative issues (episodes where the focus jumped a lot were not my favorite). I could have also done with our young MC being more of a character. She’s too often a blank slate for our perspective. But the complexity of some of the relations and other things made it really enjoyable, even if the whole journal part isn’t actually important.

@ezra@problemeowtic.net I'm not sure it's not so much a desire to not let them see, as the fact that the realities and requirements of a city provide really bad soil for conservatism. I think in part, it really is that scary for them. Cities demand compromise and shared space. The allure of conservatism is that it promises certain individuals personal power within their own space, of which there is precious little in a city. It's hard to control your wife and children exactly as you please when there is only a thin apartment wall between you and your neighbor, who is always there to judge or call in a DV. There is also the fact that you will not be able to isolate your fief from other cultures, ideas, and identities. The hellscape design of American cities tries its best to blunt this, but it can only do so much lifting.

@kichae@wanderingadventure.party I think LLM writing has the “Average size” problem. Background: in the 50s the US Air Force had fit issues in their planes. They discovered that their “average size” cockpits didn’t fit most pilot’s actual dimensions in all categories, leading to discomfort for almost everyone. I feel like LLM writing is this way. By being a statistical product of many writers voices, even within the same genre, it ends up fitting none of them, giving it a distinctive “uncanny” twinge in the voice. I think that is part where the skin crawl comes from.

I bought a 25lb bag of lentils with the goal of dry canning them and keeping them for a rainy day.
..but then there was a literal rainy day and my trunk got wet, ruining them.

At least for my purpose. An acquaintance is now in the process of boiling batches of that 25lbs of lentils for the purpose of feeding them to their 15 chickens.

@puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social re fediverse sensationalism: It gives me constant fits that people don't contextualize what they're talking about, creating fake information and FUD. This is especially bad with instances that have small text-limits, because the fidelity of information just gets worse through every hand it passes through. Re This incident: I remember reading the author's blog and finding it reasonable. It was going to be controversial though because people have some weird expectation that a single FOSS maintainer owes them something more than Jack and shit in regards to their time. Whisky remains GPL software on github. Someone else can fork it if they disagree with the author's stance. Re Cynical note: people complaining about the cost of CrossOver bought a luxury-minded machine that runs a proprietary OS that pretty much demands that developers fork out cash to develop software for, and is thus known for its paid-software ecosystem. What exactly did we think was the expectation here?
