One of my former students has a $2000 Yozma dirt bike that he tried riding to school & the police stopped him along the way, confiscated his bike, dropped him off at school. Parents had to pay a fine to get the bike back - can't be ridden on roads, rider must be 16+ & have a license for it. Why would you 1) buy this for your 10-year-old & 2) let them ride it to school?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org On my backpacking trip this past week, we ran into several PCT hikers who were relying solely on an app for their info. My backpacking partner, a 40+ year veteran mountaineer who has climbed pretty much EVERYTHING in WA & used to run orienteering courses plus the survival ones absolutely excoriated them for their short-sightedness. Paper map & compass are still essential, even if you're a stupid UL hiker begging for food because you didn't pack enough d/t weight.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Friend's daughter is at UN-Reno in a dorm. They have not evacuated yet, but were told to get ready by university officials. She has no car, but has a suitcase ready to go & supposedly there are evac plans (buses, I think?). Lots of students with cars already left, some went & rented cars last night & packed up & left. They can see where the fire is. My friend (orig from Spokane) was ready to drive all night (thru fires) & go pick her up, but did not. Yet.

We'd open up the windows, set up the exhaust fan out one window & the intake fan in another window across the house, & sleep in relative coolness (upper 70s). Close up in the morning, close all the curtains, & we'd manage the day decently with fans. House was cinderblock, well-insulated, had deep roof overhangs & porches & sunshade screens. Not possible anymore.

We ran into a young guy who was SOBO on the PCT & had a planned re-supply that was 2 days away, but was out of food because he misjudged the amount of time it would take him to get there because...elevation loss & gain. He had no emergency supplies because he was trying to keep light. He only had a Tarptent shelter, so he was getting completely chewed up by bugs at night. He was a mess. We each gave him a protein bar & my backpacking partner gave him a lecture.

Hanford is a disaster, the nuclear crazies are going to blow up their section of Utah & make the rest uninhabitable, & the uranium miners are polluting the Grand Canyon area again as well as part of the 4 corners are where they are trucking in waste. Plus my mom's a downwinder & the Navajo people have suffered WAY too much from uranium mining.

I stood up the School Board mtg, held up my Nokia candy bar phone & asked when they'd be supplying us with staff iPhones for this mandate because I couldn't afford one on my teacher salary & if it was necessary for my job, then they should supply it. Amazing how quickly that mandate disappeared!

Yes, the PCT is relatively easy to follow, however, when you need to reroute d/t fires or emergencies, you don't have the info you need right away. We also noticed that the hikers were solely paying to the mileage, not the elevation. If they were using a Green Trails map, they could see the contour lines & be able to judge elevation & whether their planned 24 miles that day is actually realistic. (Anyone who has hiked Section K of the PCT in WA knows what I am talking about.)

It's also why I moved my dad out of one assisted living place (old 70's building) into a newer one. There was no way they'd be able to get everyone out in time if there was a fire in the old one. Sprinklers gave them much more of a chance.

One thing my district did during our "remodel" was cut down all the trees right next to our buildings - for this very reason. The annual sprinkler check is a PITA, but a newer building down the road from mine had no sprinklers & went up like a torch after a Tesla in a garage caught fire a couple of years ago.

Any idea what type of service I'd call to trim some branches that are scraping the roof & wall of my condo? Landscaper? Arborist? Tree cutting company? I have a ladder & a big extension pruner, but I'm too short to get these even when I'm on the ladder & I'm not getting up on roofs anymore. HOA has done nothing, so I'm going to have to pay out of pocket. It's not a big job - probably 20 mins for someone who can get up on the roof.

My experiences with the student loan system were bad enough. I ended up paying back significantly more than I ever took out. Now I have friends who are looking at new student loan payments higher than their mortgage under the new plans coming out of tRump's greed & idiocy. Obviously this is all part of the GOP plan, so only the wealthy (white) get a full college education.
