Hard to see in a photo, but the field clover is just blanketing a lot of the paths and field right now. Very fairy wonderland.

Taking a stab at trying a new instance. Following the instructions at the attached link. I am guessing this means folks I follow might get new follow requests from me -- just a heads up.

Giving @NearerAndFarther@bookstodon.com a whirl.

Was filling the chickens food when the rain came. I ducked into the coop for cover.

The rain is still passing.

I am still in the coop.

@cryptgoat did the same a few weeks ago. It's confusing to me how that social media presence is allowed to persist. What I'd love instead: posts on making the most of the OS. That would be useful.

I'm more mad about the birds that have been yanking up some of my transplants lately! Four or five marigolds, several beets and greens, a cabbage. Not sure what to do other than make sure I pack them in firm and water them in real good.

Elizabeth Bishop has been keeping me poetry'd the last bit of time, just one here and there from her collected works. It's raining right now and so "a cold spring" seemed apt. I love the four instances of "your" in this poem because they say so much, although that so much varies depending on the flicker of the light. They are possessives --- but as such they feel almost desperate. For the world described, and the poem doing the describing, would function just fine without them. And yet, that's also what they do: they put the bigness and distance of the world in perspective and proximity. So while the world might do just fine without them, the poem, on the other hand, would certainly *not* be the same poem without them. Drop four words and something would be lost.

Some new sprouts poking up this morning:
Thai basil
Genovese basil

And three tomatoes: coustralee, Isis, and San marzano.

As well as additional sprouts for everything started yesterday.

Either today or tomorrow, we'll start a few more flats, mostly of new items who are now OK to start, calendar-wise.

Didn't get the lettuces going last week, so that's also high on the list.

Been a weird week in the garden, where I've gotten a lot done but also feel like I haven't gotten anything done.

Today's main goals:
* thin some beets, kohlrabi, other items

* t-posts up for trellising on a few beds

* add a run to the peas trellis so they can grow higher (hoping they produce before it gets even hotter than it already is!)

* possibly get one bed of winter squash in

* as always, some more bed forming (the end is in sight!) and weeding

The good news is we'll do some light harvesting this weekend. Woohoo!

The excellent print publication Cake Zine is beginning a subscription member model. They publish twice a year. I have two issues and they are great: very well-produced, thoughtful and innovative writing, with interesting themes.

All related to food.

Would recommend for anyone who likes creative food writing!

3) The modern world can stink but honestly, it's kind of amazing that we have the infrastructure and technology that allows us to traipse 600 miles in a day and only break a sweat bc your AC is old and cranky. I know there's a lot of historical and environmental baggage that comes with roads and whatnot, but I am feeling very thankful for navigable roads, rest stops, and snacks. Good job, roads, and the people who make them.

1) This is a really pretty time of year to drive through southern IL/IN and KY. A lot of trees are still bare, so you get a lot of color and texture from the wood, but you also get trees that are just starting to leaf out, and pines that are greening up again. Truly gorgeous at times, like the spring version of autumn color. This is hilly country, too, which adds to it all. 2) People are cool. From the guy who serviced our truck before we left to the folks we were picking up our equipment from, and all the fast food and gas station attendants along the way, sometimes it feels like everyone's been placed there to help you. (Except other drivers, of course. Never other drivers, lol.) For a minute it felt like we would have to delay our trip. But with the help of others, everything clicked into place.

Didn't expect the posthumous D'Angelo leaks/releases to get so hot so quick, but here we are D'Angelo - It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night/1999 (Carnegie Hall rehearsal, 2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDqojDPYrg8 That's Quest's voice so I'm guessing he played this on one of his live insta/youtube shows at some point recently? Think I'm going to take a stab at a tomato bread today... One where the dough itself is flavored with tomato.

No real starting recipe, will use some posts from The Fresh Loaf for inspiration on the tomato piece, and a recipe from Hamelman or Berenbaum as a base. (Maybe H's Rustic Bread?)

Most of what I am seeing uses a tomato paste or puree in the mix, along with herbs. We picked up some sundried tomatoes, so I think I will fold some of those in during shaping, too.

Also, should probably start a list of good weather and season poems. Bishop must have had one such list going. The epitaph to this one is from Hopkins: "Nothing is so beautiful as spring" -- another banger of a poem (attached). ((lost power literally as I was pressing send on this -- big tree down across the street, struck straight away by lightning. eventful 5 minutes! had to fire up the hotspot.)) https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/51002/spring-56d22e75d65bd

There are five or six lines of cars, like on an expressway toll stop, each of them backed up 10 or so deep, minimum. It spans half the parking lot, which is quite large. And the lines keep moving up but more cars keep arriving. I am grateful this exists and it is clearly doing necessary work. But quite sobering to see, and feels... Ominous somehow, when combined with how precarious the economy is.

--Through turret-slits we saw the crumbs or pebbles that lay below the riveted flanks on the green forest floor, like those the clever children placed by day and followed to their door one night, at least; and in the ugly tanks we tracked them all the night. Sometimes they disappeared, dissolving in the moss, sometimes we went too fast and ground them underneath. How stupidly we steered until the night was past and never found out where the cottage was.

Yesterday was a tough day, today is going to be a long day.

But last night I learned that Harriet Tubman, the experimental rock-ish trio featuring Melvin Gibbs, Brandon Ross, JT Lewis, has a new album out on Friday with none other than

GEORGIA ANNE MULDROW

hallelujah and amen, that's what's up.

Details here:

Went down a rabbit hole of Michael Bland-related videos on Youtube -- Michael B being the drummer of Prince's NPG band in the 90s, though he's done *plenty* since then -- and was thrilled to see this was posted just 5 days ago.

Michael b and Sonny Thompson (bass player from the NPG days) together in the studio with Cory Wong.

WARNING: upside-down #bass playing alert!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i98hSLhy0qA

Would have liked to have heard them play more here, but this was a lot of fun to watch.

Fuller passage below. This comes after Blackhawk has described the relative failures of North American expeditions by Coronado and de Soto: "North American history originates amid such chaos and failure. Across the continent, Spanish (and later French, Dutch, and English) exploration was often marked by failures. Historians have tended to see these events from the perspective of European national history, narrating the explorers' arrival, departure, and fate as the main features of analysis. Histories of failure are by definition unnationalistic, and for many, de Soto and Coronado are best known as namesakes for American car manufacturers, not for massacring Indian peoples. Borderlands history invites a deeper look at past failures because failures tell stories that unmake national histories."

Also, "Ask Rufus" is definitely Rufus's artiest album. Actually, I don't know if that's the right word. But it's different in their catalog, IMO. Some of their best songwriting, but very open.

My in-laws sent us pics of their new compact tractor with a front loader attachment and I was jealous and what has happened to me?

But also, little do they know that we are picking up our own new toy tomorrow. They will be first on the photo bomb list.

(I'll share pics here, too)

Soul / R&B / hip hop folks --

Don't sleep on this Karriem Riggins and Liv.e album today, out under the name GENA.

Album is called "The Pleasure is Yours"

Giving me hints of Madlib, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sa-Ra.

Link is probably NSFW for mild language:

Finally getting some rain today.

We are in this weird pocket that can sometimes get zero rain even when folks around us are getting heavy storms.

(Uneducated guess is that it has something to do with our nearby lake.)

Hoping for more rather than less today, even though it will throw off some of my outside work. We could really use it.

@brianb@fosstodon.org You can almost see, in the layout of their buildings, the way the business has outgrown itself and needed more space, which is pretty cool. It was a great drive there at the end. Although from our direction, we went through Louisville and, as much as I love the city, I'd prefer to never have to drive through it ever again, lol. But we're really glad we made the trip.
