NVDA 2026.2 Beta 8 is now available for testing. Beta 8 includes:

Updates to translations
Improve magnifier behaviour when using higher DPI scaling
Fix magnifier from interfering with opening dictionary dialogs
Improve the handling of failing to activate the magnifier
Block touch screen input when using the magnifier where possible, as it is not supported yet

More logical navigation through Word documents for screen readers

There is a new setting (now in Office 365) which "allows you to use the up and down arrow keys to move through all the content in your document based on the logical reading order." - this will be a big improvement for situations including:
- Multi-column pages
- Text wrapped around images
- multi-page view

@HG @djwudi As already noted by others, the first thing will be what someone is already used to has - the cheapest option is what you already own. Next, I'd look at their needs. A touch screen phone may be tempting, but if they want magnification & zoom in a lot, you won't get nearly as much on screen as on say a 32" PC monitor. For whichever solution, look at the training materials. For NVDA, we would strongly recommend "Basic Training for NVDA" as a starting point: https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Despite the artcile name, Eric is not saying to NOT use screen readers for testing - but rather, to know WHEN screen reader testing is useful, and when another tool is a better choice

NVDA 2026.1 Beta 4 is available for testing for anyone interested in trying out the next version of NVDA before it is released!

Changes:

- Fixed a rate issue in eSpeak NG
- Fixed changing MathCAT settings
- “Use NVDA during sign-in” is no-longer checked by default in a fresh install
- Warning is given when creating a portable copy if it will downgrade an existing portable copy.
- Updates to translations.

@amir@tweesecake.social This is because NVDA accounts for things which may change when updating - for instance sometimes the format of the settings file changes (eg when we added "Only in edit controls" to speak typed words and characters - those values changed from boolean on or off, to having three states - but it doesn't account for any changes when downgrading.

@amir@tweesecake.social It's one of the reasons some people prefer the "Update CHannel Selector" add-on, as it does allow you to more easily jump between channels (note that with that add-on, as we also recommend to anyone doing it manually - say an alpha build comes out today and you install that - if you change your mind and switch back to the stable channel, it WON'T change until the NEXT build for that channel comes out.

Stable versions only update to stable versions.
Beta and RC versions will update to newer beta or RC versions but not stable. So NVDA 2025.3.1 RC will automatically update to NVDA 2026.1 Beta 1 when it comes out.

The last RC is identical to the final stable version in all but version number - so if you are running NVDA 2025.3.1 RC, you have exactly the same code as someone with NVDA 2025.3.1 (stable), even though it may seem a little odd :)

The presenters were Mary Stores and Brian Richwine from Indiana University Bloomington. @robini71@mastodon.social Just looking at our own profile, there is a "Browse" button with "No file selected" next to it - although like you, we do already have a profile picture. I think if I activate that "browse" button and choose a picture, it will THEN tell me the image I've selected - although having it display when you already have a profile picture is a little confusing - that is the case for sighted users as well, although a sighted user can more easily SEE that there is an image there.

@asael@mastodon.ml @rmcpantoja@mastodon.social It's not so much that it's not a good idea, as that it wasn't thought of / setup when it was created - similar to how the last RC of NVDA 2025.1 will be identical to the stable release except the version number, we can't just change it to stable, we need to re-release it in that channel. It may be able to be updated to allow this, but would b ea lot of work so not something which will be available in the short term.
