Hello from Google 😁!

After over 10 years writing about Android, I'm SO excited to finally be ... working for Android!

Just as exciting is that my role includes community engagement, so I'll still be connected to the Android community I love and hope to help people learn to ♥️ Android as much as I do.

How am I gonna do that? You'll be hearing much more from me in the near future about these efforts, so stay tuned!

Some personal news:

This is my last day at Android Authority, and it also marks the end of my time posting Android news!

I've spent the past 10 years writing about Android, and I've enjoyed every moment of it. What began as a hobby in college — tinkering with custom ROMs and modding my phone — turned into a long career, one totally disconnected from my degree in Biomedical Engineering.

📢 Important update on sideloading on Android

It’s of course here to stay. The team’s been listening carefully to feedback from power users who want a way (apart from ADB) to install apps that don’t go through developer verification.

Today, we have more details on the advanced flow that gives you this option.

📣Important clarifications on the new advanced flow for sideloading on Android!

1) It is a one-time process. Once you go through it, you can choose to allow installing unregistered apps indefinitely.

2) ADB installs are not affected. The waiting period does not apply to app installs via ADB.

3) It's my understanding that you don't have to keep developer options enabled after you enable the advanced flow. Once you make the change on your device, it's enabled...

🔐BREAKING: Google will begin verifying the identity of ALL DEVELOPERS who distribute apps on Android, even if it's outside the Play Store!

This is to prevent malware developers from using anonymity as a shield.

📣We've updated our FAQ page on Android developer verification to answer some of your questions about the new advanced flow.

I wanted to highlight one answer in particular that I think addresses a pain point some of you have brought up:

Q: If I enable the advanced flow on my current Android device, do I have to enable it again on my new device?

A: No, it will be carried through your new device. You won’t have to complete this flow every time you get a new device.

🖥️What will happen to existing Chromebooks as Google transitions its PC efforts to the Android-based 'Aluminium OS'?

In an interview with Chrome Unboxed, Google VP John Maletis says the company is not giving up on them and to expect "continuity of experience and devices" as many millions of users are so reliant on them.

Furthermore, he says Google is maintaining its commitment of 10 years of support of these devices.

🔍Google is quietly making the Pixel Launcher faster with a new shortcut

The ability to launch an app from the Pixel Launcher by partially typing its name and then hitting the enter key is rolling out more widely.

Thanks to everyone for the tip!

👓Google has extended its strategic partnership with XREAL for Android XR hardware, naming them its lead hardware partner for the ecosystem.

The companies will "collaborate on bringing Android XR to optical-see-through devices, like wired XR glasses, and work to expand support for Android XR development."

More news on Project Aura, a pair of Android XR glasses that deliver the full experience, is coming later this year.

A sad day: Branch, the company that acquired Nova Launcher ~2 years ago, has laid off many of the great people working on/for it, including Cliff Wade (their CM), Rob (one of their developers), and many others.

The Galaxy S24 series can start a Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast! This lets you broadcast the media you're listening to to nearby devices that support Auracast. This is accessed by going to Settings > Bluetooth > three-dot menu > Broadcast sound using Auracast.

Other Galaxy devices that support BLE Audio might gain this capability when they upgrade to One UI 6.1.
