For all those keeping up with what's happening with volunteers at @bemyeyes@mastodon.social in the blind community with the whole volunteers recording calls thing saying the app should just ban screen recording, I would just like to say it's not that simple. What people are doing is videoing the device making the call with another device. So the app limiting the ability to screen record would probably help if that's how it's being done, however, this could be hard to actually do anything about. The one solution I can think of is banning people from the app based on the name linked to the account but not sure how ethical that is in case some people have similar names. If anyone else has ideas of what can be done I'd definitely be interested in hearing them. Just thought I'd put that out there for those unaware.

@TheQuinbox I think it's a great idea! What you could also do if you want to have the app be as widely availible but still cover dev costs would be to have the app be free but then pay a fee to unlock things such as more natural voices through something like Piper TTS or Supertonic. You could also have a tip jar button somewhere that would allow people to make donations with different amounts.

@goyo @lexipic @bemyeyes I wish it was that easy, but I saw the video linked in that exact Facebook post and it seems they record the calls on another device or get someone else to record the device I can't tell which. Either way it's gross because if the app did block them from screen recording they can get around it.
Was in the car with mom and she let me blast one of my metal songs. We're pulling into the driveway and unbeknowns to me our sweet older neighbor who I've never heard utter a cuss in my life was outside. So we pull in and this poor guy has to listen to me singing about not giving a fuck. Sorry neighbor! Not!!! 😂

I heard about the Braille and Speak from a long time ago but only really started learning about assistive tech in 2013 and that was just VoiceOver so definitely didn't get to be hands on with something like that. So seeing those notetaker style devices getting revived was exciting. And yeah it's so hard because while I do agree with what others in the thread have said about software updates I also do see the point of monetization as well. What I was thinking when I wrote my reply was of things like NVDA where they sell courses on using NVDA or possibly writing some kind of software that is separate from the BTSpeak and can be run on Linux as a whole but is optomized for the device. So then that way they're getting income from BTSpeak users and non BTSpeak users. but these ideas came from a tired brain so could have flaws.
