My research focussed on cultural responses to #public #health messaging in international campaigns, from WHO's maternal-child health initiatives in #Tonga, to the global fight against HIV in #Papua New Guinea, & the COVID-19 pandemic in #Canada.
Keen on urbanism, green design, bike infrastructure; verified via #fedi22.

What is my PM thinking?? A gas tax holiday? Stupid plan! If @mark-carney.bsky.social had announced the excise tax $ was going to be temporarily diverted to #municipalities to allow commuters to bus for free, for eg, that would have been a message that showed commitment to affordability for those suffering + #value for the environment / recognition climate change is real.
@avilewis@mstdn.ca To Avi, Ilana and Jenny Lewis, Michelle Landsberg, all your kith and kin;
Sincere, deep condolences on the passing of your father, the great orator, leader, diplomat and statesman Stephen Lewis.
His memory will always be a blessing to Canadians and the world. For me personally, it begins with him giving the address at my undergraduate graduation at McMaster U. I'd never felt so inspired to do good. Then I would listen to him debate Conservative pundit Dalton Camp and a liberal (I forget the name) on CBC Morningside. Much later, I ended up working on HIV and GBV projects and his work in Africa was again personally inspirational. When I think of what it means to be NDP, it is Stephen Lewis who I think of.
I count having lived in the world simultaneously with such a dedicated giant of a man a blessing.
Allow all of us who respected him the honour of sharing a portion of your grief.

Guilty pleasure:
@NFB@socel.net shorts on Saturday mornings.
Like this delight, with it's hidden #anthropological message: what we study, and how, tells us as much about ourselves as it does the object of our attention:

Poor Ambassador Hoekstra is frustrated. Of Canada he says:
"They're sending a very, very clear message about how doing business with the United States doesn't appeal to them".
Well DUH. He's quick, is old Pete, isn't he? (About as quick as molasses in January.)

Here to say Hey.Café, the new, #Canadian social network that is privacy focused, ad free, and a safe space to share, is pretty good! The team of volunteers who have built it are based in BC. They are incredibly responsive to new members requests for support and have instituted a ton of updates. They are also planning to federate and join the fediverse! It's web-based, already has an app for iPhone, and an Android app is rolling out in the next week or so.
If you join please say "HyL invited me" so I can welcome and follow you.
It's a no-brainer that the new 🇨🇦 #NDP leadership team will be working closely with Canada's unions -as always & as it should be: workers are the heart of any community, & social democracy movement too. But any speculation that not electing Ashton as leader is a sign of being soft on unions= untrue! While I 🧡'd #RobAshton for reinjecting "class war" into our lexicon, he clearly didn't have requisite skills (0 French; using AI in his Reddit AMA was a no-no...); nor was eschewing #TonyMcQuail anti-environment, or not electing #TanilleJohnston (yet!) anti-Indigenous or anti-♀️
BUT: it is time for 🇨🇦 unions to face some member issues: the climate change deniers, the Poilievre-bros who voted CPC, the anti-taxers, the "♂️ unions" (trades/transport) letting the "♀️unions" (RNs, teachers & public servants) take the strike risks, etc.
Meantime, I hope @CanadianLabour@union.place has already invited @avilewis@mstdn.ca to address their convention in May (it'll mean he & @wabkinew@bird.makeup can hang again, too).

Today's listening party for Inferno - the latest from
@boardsofcanada@mastodon.social - was a trip! What a beautiful, intriguing, series of compositions. Great albumn! I can't wait to listen again (hopefully with a digital download).
Prof in Human Ecology, University of Alberta is researching clothing & textiles donation behaviour in Canada: It's an interesting survey:
