3,400 deaths in a day: India's extreme heat days are deadlier than we imagined

Official counts of "heatstroke deaths" are often low, sometimes just a few hundred in a bad season, because many heat-related deaths are not labelled as such. This implies that the toll could be much higher.

ACTION FOR HAPPINESS The coming month is themed as Altruistic August where we focus on the benefits of giving, mutual aid and sharing. Doing kind things for others is not only good for them, it makes us happier and healthier too. We’ll explore how caring for others creates stronger connections between people and helps to build a happier community for us all. Any thoughts before then would be appreciated. @scottsantens@hachyderm.io We are maybe entering a star wars phase for the planet in order to enter, if we survive, a star trek universe. All be it that one will need a lot of work. Undoubtedly humaneity (not a misspelling by the way) as an aim is a work in progress. I would add a belief in UBI, which I consider a citizens premium, and a possible saviour of democracy, and maybe citizenship itself, would be my starting point. At least for now.

If you don't fit in, if you feel at odds with the world, if your identity is troubled and frayed, if you feel lost and ashamed- it could be because you have retained the human values you were supposed to have discarded. You are a deviant. Be proud. We need to be radical, diverse and deviate.

The Chandogya Upanishad reminds us, “As vast as the infinite world beyond is the world within the lotus of the heart.” There are worlds within us.
This is consciousness we can each access it.

“I strongly condemn the illegal Israeli and US aggression against Iran, in violation of the most fundamental rule of international law and the United Nations Charter – the ban on the use of force. This is not lawful self-defence against an armed attack by Iran, and the Security Council has not authorized it. Preventive disarmament, counter-terrorism, and regime change on this scale constitute the international crime of aggression. All responsible governments should condemn this lawlessness from two countries who excel in shredding the international legal order.” Ben Saul, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights

Not only does war cause immense fiscal strain, but it also leaves lasting physical and emotional scars on countless lives and gerations. I am profoundly troubled by how war sustains the cycle of division, distancing us from the interconnectedness that is evident in every facet of our planetary society. The costs of war are not confined to battlegrounds; they seep into our homes, our economies, and our cultures. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, global military expenditure in 2021 reached an all-time high of nearly $2.1 trillion. This staggering amount could instead have been funneled into solutions for the myriad challenges we face today, from climate change to poverty alleviation. Imagine a world where these funds are allocated to healing and rebuilding rather than destruction and division. https://www.change.org/Endwardevelopunity

Ubuntu is a term that originated in southern Africa to mean the sense of community with others. In the Novasutras movement, we have expanded this definition to include the broader connections between all things, binding together the more-than-human world. It incorporates our duty as conscious humans to participate in this community with reverence, joy, generosity, gratitude, and loving-kindness.

What does the UN Secretary-General actually do? 🌍

They are more than a global figure — they are the voice of diplomacy, the bridge between nations, and a key leader in tackling the world’s biggest challenges.

From peace and security to climate action and human rights, their role helps shape the direction of our shared future.

And yet… since 1945, there has never been a woman in this position.

Representation matters. Leadership matters. Change is overdue.

Perpetual material/economic growth is just immature thinking.
It is inhumane, unscientific, unjust, unfair, suicidal, the list could be long.
Unlike the list that supports it which is short but includes: it makes rich people and 'entities' richer, it could get us to a hostile empty planet. Aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhh

The original phone was an instrument of communication. The new "hand held device" usually called a phone is an instrument of consumerism and ongoing colonisation, in its many forms, as such we were conned by language into thinking it was a service to the majority.

The majority of humans are more than capable of representing themselves. So I hope we will learn from history and try another democratic process involving #universaleducation

"Can we separate politics from democracy? Our political system is wholly corrupt and no longer fit for purpose – if it ever was.
What if Citizens’ Assemblies could bring agency to the whole of our population, helping people to find empathy with each other, to engage in conversations in good faith and work together to solve the wicked problems of the polycrisis: social inequity, climate chaos, the death cult of predatory capitalism.
These are so interlinked, we won’t fix one unless we fix them all".

Maybe we have passed this point, so what choices do we have?

Where else can so many states in, number, political persuasion, varied size, economic standing be seen talking together, trying to develop a better world?

The United Nations for all its shortcomings is the best hope we have as a global governance watchdog (apparently). Needless to say it needs major reforms & restructuring, not least ending the #veto & end present security council failures, they are undemocratic.

We need to experiment with democracy not put it in a box. It let's #civilsociety thrive & people grow.

"Fostering dependancy" is scorned upon in caring systems, but is the new model for suicidal economic growth.
https://open.substack.com/pub/savageminds/p/my-address-to-the-european-parliament?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=6gykt6

Military Keynesianism is an economic policy based on the position that government should raise military spending to boost economic growth. It is a fiscal stimulus policy as advocated by John Maynard Keynes. But where Keynes advocated increasing public spending on socially useful items (infrastructure in particular), additional public spending is allocated to the arms industry, the area of defense being that over which the executive exercises greater discretionary power. This type of economy is linked to the interdependence between welfare and warfare states, in which the latter feeds the former, in a potentially unlimited spiral. The term is often used pejoratively to refer to politicians who apparently reject Keynesian economics, but use Keynesian arguments in support of excessive military spending...
