If I boost something, it’s not always because I agree with it. Sometimes it’s because I find it thought-provoking even though I don’t agree with some or even all of it, and sometimes it’s because I think others will find it useful or interesting.

@amerpie@social.lol @dhry@mastodon.social #mac #apple

Can either of you or anyone else suggest an alternative to AltTab for #macOS?

I updated it via homebrew the other day and my fav feature (alt-` switching between open windows of the current app *across all Spaces*) was moved behind a paywall. I wouldn’t have updated if I’d known.

@ellane I use that shortcut when I’m on a zoom call and someone shows a visual or diagram I want to keep, so I can paste it into my Obsidian meeting note

@ellane You’re right, different people struggle with different things. Our egos love to tempt us to be judgmental about or feel superior to people who struggle with things we don’t, and to be defensive or in denial about things we do personally struggle with. But as someone who’s not naturally minimalist, I like that insight about making space for things I love or actually need. (Despite the little nagging non-minimalist voice inevitably saying “But what if I ever *do* need it?”)

@ellane It’s been similarly cool lately where I am in the northern hemisphere. Twice a year we have similar temperatures as we pass by going in opposite directions.

German speakers or writers who use a US #Mac keyboard layout may find this useful for typing umlauts, ß, and € (Haven’t used it myself, just fyi) #apple

@dhry When you hit a hotkey (option-shift-2 by default), TextSniper pops up a special mouse cursor that lets you select and copy as plaintext any words, numbers, etc. you can see on your screen, whether they could otherwise be copied or not. It’s ideal for copying text out of an image, but I also use it to copy text without picking up underlying hyperlinks, formatting, etc. Abbyy Finereader looks like it does something different that’s related to PDFs

@ozamidas@mastodon.social @anildash@me.dm Virtual desktop management on macOS is actually quite good if you learn the keybindings, which use the control (not command) key: Ctl-1 to 9 to jump directly to other desktops, ctl-left/right to go to adjacent desktops, ctl-up for an overview where you can add/remove/rearrange desktops and drag windows from your current desktop to others.

@ike@pkm.social It’s also crazy that the judge accepted the government’s claim that they’d suffer reputational harm *if people knew what they actually said,* and that it should therefore be legally suppressed.

@ike@pkm.social Thanks for the detailed responses. Imo personal efforts are helpful but major change has to come via policy: appealing and convenient mass transit, mandated emissions standards, etc.

@ike@pkm.social I don’t mean this in hostile or a gotcha way, but I’m genuinely curious because iirc you’re a recreational pilot. I could be wrong about this, but doesn’t a Sunday afternoon flight in a light plane burn a lot more fuel and emit more pollution than a Sunday drive through the countryside in a passenger car?

@ike@pkm.social It's also next to nothing. Nearly all of the total dollar amount of tax cuts in the Big Ugly Bill went to a few billionaires.

@caseynewton @zoeschiffer One by one Musk is getting the biggest tech companies lined up against him. He’s stiffing Google & Amazon so they’re refusing to pay him for advertising. Meta is developing a Twitter replacement, promising it will be “sanely run.” (This is the thanks he gets for making *Facebook* look almost beneficent.) All that’s left is for Apple to kick Twitter out of the App Store. Then his users will have to resort to 3rd party—oh yeah, they can’t.

@25kV There was some old-time comic, I think from the post-WW 2 era, who had a line that went, “Did you ever feel like the world is a tuxedo, and you’re pair of brown shoes?”

I also played around with i3 enough to see why its users like it, and was particularly impressed with the quality of the documentation.

Should how much you pay in taxes determine how much your vote counts? Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke seems to think so.

@ellane@pkm.social Does that mean they do eventually pay you when you finally reach $100 in sales since the last payment, even if that takes multiple months, or that they don’t ever pay you for what you earn in a given month if it’s less than $100?
