Tip: you can reduce the heat your laptop/desktop computer generates by limiting its CPU frequency.

To restrict all cores to 800MHz on Linux, run one of these two commands as root:

cpupower frequency-set -u 800MHz

echo 800000 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq

#heatwave #laptop #desktop #computers #downclocking #EnergyEfficiency #Linux #shell

On this somewhat special anniversary, I also want to state once again that Liberapay is an open project. *You* can contribute to it if you have some basic skills, and receive some money in return. There's still a lot of work to do, including quite a bit that doesn't involve programming, and plenty to learn. Liberapay is written in #Python, #SQL (until I can finish building what's needed to get rid of it), and as little #JavaScript as possible. → https://github.com/liberapay/liberapay.com/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

A year ago I published https://github.com/Changaco/python-memory-inventory. The cost of RAM has since skyrocketed because of the AI craze, so memory optimization has become even more important.

This module might help you improve your understanding of Python, so you might want to look into it even if you don't have any immediate need to optimize your code.

If you missed it, the original announcement included some interesting facts: @Changaco@mastodon.cloud

If you're part of the open source movement, or even just interested in it, you might want to watch this impressive documentary by @chadwhitacre.com@bsky.brid.gy.

It was partly filmed in Ukraine and covers some of the war's consequences, but it isn't about the war.

If you don't know Chad, I think it says a lot that he entered a war zone for a documentary about open source.

@verdre@mastodon.social I recently came to the same conclusion that the fundamental mistake in how out-of-memory situations are handled under #Linux is that it's based on killing processes rather than pausing them. That leads to doing nothing until it's too late, because killing a process can result in data loss whereas pausing it is relatively harmless (and entirely normal in #Android). It isn't really a problem with the kernel though. It's the desktop environments that should handle pausing apps when OOM.

@bal4e@tech.lgbt Ooh, that's a more recent version of the paper than the one I found. I'll add it to the Wikipedia article. If you'd like an explanation of Earley's algorithm and the improvements to it, the recommended reading is https://loup-vaillant.fr/tutorials/earley-parsing/

@diemkay@hachyderm.io A few reactors out of 57, and not because the heat would have damaged them. Nuclear reactors that evacuate their unused heat in rivers instead of in the air are sometimes stopped to avoid heating up those rivers too much. So far it isn't considered necessary to build cooling towers for those reactors just to avoid stopping them for short periods of time during some heatwaves.

@zwol@masto.hackers.town Turning off overcommit is only viable when there's more than enough RAM and swap for all virtual memory allocations, so it isn't a safe default for everyone. However, in most cases it should be possible to make disabling overcommit viable by adding swap. @root42@chaos.social @verdre@mastodon.social
