@simonzerafa @chris_bloke Strange that the robotic steering assists of BMW, Audi & Mercedes default continually to aligning with the centre line on any road, regardless of the safety or more likely danger that overtaking manoeuvres pose. Or maybe it’s just the drivers think they have no vulnerability & own the roads.

@the_wub@mastodon.social @CatherineBabault@mastodon.social I have no knowledge of the local retail structures in Norway or an awareness of what communication are like in your country. For decades in the UK local retail outlets have been decimated by the rise of supermarkets. Amazon - love it or hate it - fills an enormous gap, but many small businesses now use its channels to extend their reach. What that effect it has in tax & local economies is hard to say, but probably good.

@cstross@wandering.shop Hard to disagree. I remain a Y2K sceptic despite assertions by the ITsphere that it was vital. On AI convinced it’s worse than the South Sea Bubble for fantasy & delusion. As a hard-nosed retired Chartered Accountant with 50+ years in commerce I really see little realistic business applications.

@ketan Maybe so but have you reflected on the 6,000 or so items that are derived from petrochemicals in daily use, including the plastics on the device we are using for our posts? Crude oil extraction serves many purposes other than transport.

@iwein @ketan That may well be so but if I had a £/$ for every time I’ve heard ‘it must be possible’ in my lifetime I’d be extremely wealthy. Ignorance is key to this & reliance on existing means too well established. Scaling up of alternatives a possibility but e.g. here in the U.K. it’s gone very quiet about replacing natural gas with hydrogen for residential heating or freight transport.

@simonzerafa @chris_bloke My selection sought to identify only those who seem to believe they are the ‘Kings of the Road’ & us lesser mortals should genuflect in terms of onward passage. My Vauxhalls manage quite fine on any part of the road, depending on the appropriate conditions.

@eanakashima@hachyderm.io Strikes me as basic - when walking in a crowd most tend to walk towards the gaps not the obstacles or people.

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Sad thing is that in local shops there is a paucity of what people want, need or like at reasonable prices or availability.

@CatherineBabault@mastodon.social @the_wub@mastodon.social The only local businesses that I frequent are either branches of national concerns or, occasionally an independent hardware store, that is a franchise of an online retailer. Live in an East Sussex town of 24,000 people No local businesses either carry what we need or could ever match the delivery or range of items available. With many small businesses selling through Amazon it’s a win-win for both me & them. Hair shirt - wear it if it’s not too itchy - not me.

@the_wub@mastodon.social @CatherineBabault@mastodon.social I presume you have considered the sustainability of using wood & the rate at which replenishment is dwarfed by the rate of usage. Also the significant particle emissions from wood-burning. There are always consequences to any choice, many unintended.

@the_wub@mastodon.social @CatherineBabault@mastodon.social Ah, very different from the U.K. Here woods & forestry are in the remoter parts & sadly in the Highlands of Scotland have been harvested devastatingly in the past decade, having been planted some 50 years or so ago. I used to work for a Group that imported Norwegian Spruce plywood.

@chiffchaff@tech.lgbt @the_wub@mastodon.social @CatherineBabault@mastodon.social It’s a with of free choice. You do what you do, we do what we do. I have no sense of superiority or great concern from a financial angle. As a retired Chartered Accountant I regard myself as much of a discerning buyer as the next person.
