This is my favorite photo. I took it 14 years ago, at a Carnaval celebration in the Mission and published it here once, in black and white. Posted and done. End of story. Well not quite. A couple of weeks ago I went back to my Lightroom catalog, took another look, and decided the photo looked much better in color. So here it is. A moment frozen in time. I'm going to pin this for a while to remind myself to go out and take more street photos... because that is something that makes me really happy. #photography #StreetPhotography

Well it's time for me to make a contribution to #Shittember... a tag that acknowledges that, as hard as you try to make photos that impress, you can still successfully fail. So for this post, I need to take you back to that September 15 years ago... to the wind farm near Rio Vista, when I had a brilliant idea: to capture spinning turbines with a long exposure. With camera, tripod, and hopeful nativity, I fully expected that bades, spinning in dark, blurry goodness, would surely cause jaws to drop. Nope. The blades vanished. All I managed to get were giant sticks poking up from the ground 🙄 #photography

We've been having a lot of unseasonably perfect weather these last few weeks. Blue skies, nice temperatures... all that boring crap instead of our usual cold and foggy days. Anyway... last night, around 11:30, Chris shouted that the fog was back so I grabbed my camera and joined him on the side deck. It was pretty dark out there so I didn't expect to get anything decent - not without a tripod and remote shutter - but I was surprised. The picture just needed a little noise reduction and a tiny bit of that thing you do with the curves. So here's the fog, at 79 mm, f/3.2, ISO 6400, for 1/10 of a second, handheld. #photography

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned I was going through my old friend Ian's journals and photos. While Ian died in1999, there are two people alive who still remember him (myself and a mutual friend in Florida). Anyway, I've saved a handful of Ian's photos from his journals. These 3 were labeled DIRIGIBLE LOS ANGELES IN PANAMA, Feb 27, 1928. I think Ian may have taken them - he was certainly there and all the other photos from that time are of Ian and his friends - but it is possible he acquired these airship photos from a vendor. I think they are really cool. #ThrowbackThursday

For #ThrowbackThursday... Yesterday's picture of a container ship sailing through the Golden Gate channel reminded me of a picture I took way back in 2007. I just gotten my first DSLR, the Pentax K10D... and for a few months I started rushing around town like Jimmy Olsen, photographing every event, apartment fire, marathon, bar opening, and person dressed like a superhero at the Bay to Breakers race. Anyway, this is what I photographed on Sunday, February 4th, 2007, from Crissy Field. And this is what the newspapers excitedly reported that day: SFGATE: QUEEN'S GRAND ENTRANCE / LARGEST SHIP EVER TO SAIL TO SAN FRANCISCO / THE SCENE ASHORE: https://share.google/UVaWiVCY5TqP9xzBA #photography

90 seconds of the 4th of July, taken from our side deck. Unlike previous years, there weren't as many local fireworks in the neighborhood this year... but nevertheless they kept banging away steadily from about 6:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Earlier in the day, Chris and I hikeded to the top of Bernal Hill (on the right side of this photo). I got dead but I'm better now 😁 #photography #LongExposure

Okay, how about a color photo for Monochrome Monday because I'm feeling frisky and because there's a quote from American photographer Walker Evans that has been rattling around in my brain for the last two days that I have to share. "Color tends to corrupt photography, and absolute color corrupts it absolutely. There are four simple words for the matter which must be whispered: Color photography is vulgar." (Note: Walker changed his mind later in life and his color photos are delightful.) Anyway, Happy Monday everyone. Here's to a little bit of color... and vulgarity. May your week have some of both. #photography

@NorcalGma2@sfba.social Last night I had a horrible dream. A nightmare, really. I was with my friend Bill who passed away last Christmas. In the dream, I had checked Bill out of the hospital and brought him to an airport. Maybe Palm Springs. I'm not sure. But what remember when I woke was the memory of me leaving Bill there, standing alone in an airline check-in line, with his dementia, while I went off to do something else. I am still shaken by that dream... by the thought that I left him there and didn't do enough. The point of this is to say you may have fears and you may think you come up short. But you haven't. Out of love and duty and just plain decency, you've stay present and kept everyone who takes care of your husband marshalled. You've done everything you can, every day. And you have experts who do the things you can't. Life right now is a roller coaster. And you've been doing an incredible job keeping everyone from falling off.

Heh. My college alumni association has been pestering me for info for their reunion book. This is what I wrote: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER I'm retired so you're not getting a resumé. I don't want a job, not unless that ** in the White House creates another Great Recession, which could happen. U really want to know about me? I take lots of the camera pictures. With a camera. Sometimes they're amusing. I like those the best. Also, I still have weekly nightmares about taking exams, naked, and panicking because I don't remember attending the course. I'll bet most of my former classmates have teh dreams too. Thanks, college. ANY ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF OR FOR FUTURE CORNELLIANS The older, grumpier me would probably tell the college-aged me "I know you think that musical was wonderful Bob, but maybe, just maybe, instead of singing 'How do you solve a problem like Maria' the nuns should have sung 'How do you solve a problem like the Nazis'." Focus on the important things in life.

But I can confirm the light that day was delicious... and it created a scene very much in the style of the Golden Gate National Park posters. Back again to 25th Street in the Mission, this time with a proper camera rather than the Polaroid. This is the work of Czech visual artist Adam Pizurny, known for his iconic digital art series "Projections." Pizurny specializes in virtual topology, using striped line patterns projected over human forms to create topographic, liquid-like illusions. Anyway, I think this is the best garage door ever... although I have a picture of a contender for that title that I will post tomorrow. #MonochromeMonday #photography

For #ThrowbackThursday: Tuesday, December 8th, 1:43 p.m. I have been racking my brain for the last 6 months, trying to figure out where I took this picture. I remember what I was doing (shooting wide open with a brand new 50mm lens)... and I remember I was facing south. But where? Was this San Francisco, or Asheville, or somewhere in the wine country? I finally figured it out where when I came across another picture snapped on the same day, at approximately the same time. This was taken in Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. Oh... one other stray thought while my coffee kicks in: I've noticed that almost every movie or show that Chris and I have streamed over the last 2-3 years has used the same cinematic color palette for every dark scene. It's either teal-and-orange or dark-green-and-orange, with inky blacks. Lovely color palettes for sure... but now so common that it is almost cliche. Anyway, here is a picture with orange and brown, with a bit of blue fringe. It's slightly different. #photography

@SFBayTide@sfba.social This was tragic and gave me pause. Later this week we will be sailing out on a slightly larger boat to scatter my friend Bill's ashes in the bay. We had the option of going beyond the Golden Gate Bridge but with rougher waters out there, I asked for us to remain inside the usually calmer bay. Foggy and cool weather is in the forecast. @MFennVT@mastodon.world You know how mountains have a tree line, above which trees don't grow? In San Francisco, some of the hills have house lines... places where the houses stop, leaving clearings for parks. *waves hands with great authority* This was taken near the top of Bernal Hill, seen on the right side of this photo.

@AncTreat5358@lgbtqia.space Been on both sides of the equation here, Alex, so chaperoning and driving were the first things that sprang to mind. Also the importance of having help with, say, lifting and moving things during recovery. 20 years ago, when I was in a wheelchair after breaking an arm and a leg, I needed a lot of help... especially help cleaning up after me. Like that day after I got home from the hospital and started painting the undersides of the kitchen cabinets while in a wheelchair. To be fair, it needed to be done because, from the wheelchair perspective, anyone could see how bad the undersides of the cabinets were. And to be even fairer, it was the Vicodin and my normal lack of impulse control that told me that painting was the solution. Anyway, I shouldn't have done that alone 🙄 @jeridansky@sfba.social

@NYSloth@masto.nyc It was probably an awful one. The great Shakespearean actor William Shatner had a lot of lemons. Nonetheless, he is much beloved. BTW, if you ask Google what is the worst Star Trek episode ever... It will cough up several answers, including "Spock's Brain" (TOS, Season 3, Episode 1) The Crime: An alien woman beams aboard, surgically removes Spock's brain, and leaves with it. Kirk and the crew have to track her down and figure out how to put his brain back into his head. The Reality: Widely mocked as the most ridiculous episode in the franchise, featuring hilariously bad dialogue. Even William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have cited it as the worst.
