I develop apps for #GNOME on Linux using #Lua. I strive to keep things simple, and simplify even further.

For fun, I like to play retro Nintendo games. I'm not much of a fan of multiplayer, but #PokémonChampions is slowly changing that.

EDIT: Follow up is here ⇒ https://discourse.gnome.org/t/thoughts-on-the-recent-debian-gr/38460/27 I have shared my thoughts on #GNOME's potential adoption of an "AI" policy in this discourse thread, and strongly suggest my fellow slop-hating GNOMies do the same. https://discourse.gnome.org/t/thoughts-on-the-recent-debian-gr/38460/11

Thoughts on the recent Debian GR

I didn’t feel it would be necessary to make another remark in this thread so soon after my first, but for various reasons I am compelled to chime in once more. I wrote my initial post to give a voice to a sentiment that I hadn’t yet seen in this thread: total and uncompromising opposition. I had noticed that @ebassi’s initial reply was largely in opposition, and not-so-coincidentally was the most-liked post in the thread. The other reason I opted to share my thoughts was what I had heard in spe

"All I want is responsible usage," said the AI bro. "Just a small change here and there. Maybe it can write test cases, too. That's not core code, certainly you couldn't reject it. Look," he continues, "if I use it for core code I'll be responsible. I'll ask another AI to review my code because no one else will. I don't need to test my code because the new model doesn't hallucinate as much. Why are you being such a luddite?" He shouts. "C'mon. Just the tip."

RE: https://sunny.garden/@bragefuglseth/116941900980651226 Finally—counting, on Linux! I'm very happy about Tally getting accepted in GNOME Circle. You won't always need it, but you'll be happy to have it when you do.

The nice thing about this new profile pic is that I look incredulous, which might well be the exact emotion through which one ought to interpret anything I say in these clownish times.

@lerothas@tech.lgbt Parchment is primarily focused on presenting text with proportional type, and nearly every other choice I made with the app is in service of that goal.

Parchment is "maximally minimalist" in scope; It contains only the features it needs and nothing more. Despite this relatively small size, Parchment has been over two years in the making. This is in part because I wanted to release a complete, finished app but also because I believed it was important to get it right. Other projects I've started and completed in that time served as exercises in determining what Parchment needed, and what it didn't. The result is what you see today.

Went to a retro game store today and immediately and *wow* game prices are ridiculously high. $50 for Metroid II or Dragon Warrior Monsters is absolutely balkworthy. I could buy TV dock to play ROMs on the TV for that money.

Missing from this post is a suggestion that users compare the speed of their work using middle-click paste with the speed of their work without, but I didn't want to be negative toward the feature because that's not what this is about. The important thing to understand is that nobody's taking the feature away from anyone. If you actually read what GNOME contributors have to say about the feature, you'll find a LOT of nuance. The same can't be said of the haters.

Duplicating tabs is, as far as I know, something that is not possible to do in any existing command-line shell/terminal setup. Telepipe's unique approach allowed this feature to be implemented basically for free. Like everything else that differentiates from the terminal, tab duplication is the kind of thing that definitely requires rethinking one's approach to working in the command-line, but it should be very beneficial.

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run I could probably talk for hours about all the subtle choices I made in the app. Some were spur-of-the-moment tweaks that stuck because they felt good, some were extremely deliberate choices that I had made before writing the first line of code.

@VATVSLPR@c.im FAQ is something I've considered, yes. I'll probably do so sooner than later, but to summarize the many reasons to prefer proportional over monospace for code: I believe monospace is a distraction. FWIW, when I use Parchment (for most of my programming and all of my writing), I use the system default sans-serif font. That is how I expect most users to use it as well.

Replying to
@tris@chaos.social I don't know if the two apps are too comparable; Other than the surface level of being plain text editors, both apps have very different goals. G•T•E is concerned with compatibility and fitting in with how users would expect a text editor to lay out text, whereas Parchment is utterly unconcerned because my goal was primarily to enable too plain text editing using proportional type. The consequences of that difference are significant.

@mkhl@social.treehouse.systems Afraid not. Though Acme was an inspiration (Parchment started as a Sam clone, believe it or not), there's no command-running in Parchment. Instead, I achieve a similar result to what you ask by using Telepipe's clipboard redirection. See this document: https://codeberg.org/vtrlx/telepipe/src/branch/main/docs/Clipboard%20Redirection.md

Replying to
@brulzki@hachyderm.io @fog@fosstodon.org It's not strictly related to middle-click paste. Many—not all, but many—of the people seemingly angry over this change simply hold grudges over perceived slights which were made over a decade ago, such as the removal of the system tray. The rant is relevant because the grudges are a big driver of the controversy. The article closes with remarks about middle-click paste precisely as a way to end with a shutdown of the remarks made by concern trolls.

@glyph@mastodon.social "Why not do it faster?" is fatalism. It's the mark of someone so cowardly that they cannot imagine themselves doing anything but make the world worse AND YET is also such a happy participant in what they know to be terrible that they have no problem actively accelerating it. "The world's polluted" is not an argument for polluting more. It should be a call to action, but the existing software development culture had already rotted by the time vibecoding came along.

@maaretp I think this post might single-handedly remove the term "self-taught" from my vocabulary. I have a longstanding habit of writing detailed developer documentation and tutorials for my projects (both professional and personal) in large part because I am a community taught programmer who continues to rely primarily on written documentation to learn. Thank you for saying this.

@glyph@mastodon.social I also can't get mad at them. It was always going to end like this. As before, the answer will be to just ignore the mainstream of software development and just do good work that actually matters. Easier said than done of course, but that's the point.

@bragefuglseth@sunny.garden I believe it's a Debian 13 problem specifically with the compose key. The compose key works fine in apps using these runtimes when running on OSes using newer GNOME versions. Why this happens, I have no idea. Very annoying because over the past 6 months my compose key has gradually become more and more useless.

@bragefuglseth@sunny.garden I think it's possible that I accidentally purged it in my post-installation-debloating spree after installing Trixie, because Debian insists on including some weird stuff. What remains odd is that this *only* affected GNOME 49/50 Flatpaks. Distro packages never broke.
