Theater District, Manhattan - 7th Avenue at 53rd Street
It’s wild to see a 10+ block view clear of traffic south to Times Square. The protest march is right behind me. Thousands of people are watching and joining the route from side streets.
Harlem, Manhattan - Fifth Avenue at 125th Street 🚇…🍃…🎨
For those not familiar with this area, making Columbus Circle the meetup spot today was more meaningful than simply route logistics. That skyscraper reflecting sunlight in the background is the Trump Hotel at 1 Central Park West.

Garment District, Manhattan - Fifth Avenue spanning West 40th-42nd Streets 🌧️🏙️
The focal point along Fifth Avenue is the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. It is the iconic main branch of the New York Public Library, and a gorgeous Beaux-Arts landmark. 🦁📚

Them: It’s wild how, culturally, nobody wants to be seen wearing a red colored hat anymore.
Me: I don’t blame them. Who wants to accidentally be associated with Ruby on Rails?

I’m sure there is room to contend this is wrongdoing in some fashion, but god help you if you needed to travel through Penn Station amidst the World Cup attendees. ⚽️🍺😱

I visited a friend’s new apartment, and the signage from a bodega on the street brightly illuminates their bathroom. Instantly reminded me of the Kenny Roger’s Chicken red neon sign episode of Seinfeld that drove Kramer nuts.
It’s wild how dismissive so many people are about the cost of gasoline because “I don’t drive so it doesn’t impact me.” As if you don’t consume goods which are transported using fuel? Lol.
For every $2 per barrel price increase it results in 1¢ per gallon at the gas pump, and every 50¢ increase at the gas pump results in ~0.6% increase in inflation which affects everybody. It sounds like an insignificant amount, but those <1% changes to inflation are wildly impactful. 🛢️👨🏻💻
NASA brings iPhone 17 Pro Max and Microsoft Surface on the moon trip.
iPhone: look at this gorgeous photo of the earth.
Surface: we can’t get Outlook to work.
I photographed ‘Dinosaur’ the pigeon back in August of last year. It’s typical for this spot to have a rotating art installation, and this is the first time I can recall community pushback over removal to make way for a new art piece. I suppose if anything was left permanently, the pigeon is quintessential New York City vibes. Anytime I am in the area I see a crowd of tourists waiting to take a photo with it. 🐦🎨👨🏻💻
With lead times of 16-18 weeks for a custom Mac mini build, I am assuming there will be a M5/M5 Pro update sooner and this is meant to dissuade orders in the meantime.
“You have been successfully unsubscribed from future marketing and survey emails”…you sure about that Chase 🏦?
We’ve been down this road before, a lot. 💳📧👨🏻💻
Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia are the only U.S. states to have ever had a Black governor. All were men. 🇺🇸👨🏻💻

“Mr. Watson — come here — I want to see you."

Steve Jobs published his “Thoughts on Flash” open letter 16 years ago; today.
Then in July 2017, Adobe announced its intention to discontinue Flash.
Friends with benefits? Pssh, I can barely afford my own health insurance.
Claude for desktop is an Electron app because, “native has nothing to offer”…and, “OS vendors use everything in their power to make you not want to develop native apps for their platform.”
When a macOS app is built with Electron I can tell immediately, and they are terrible in comparison. This piece is entirely off-base. ⚛️👨🏻💻
You’d think being given a limited scope of knowledge like a programming language would be ideal for a language model to excel at. The human element ends up proving how essential it is because writing efficient code and algorithms requires deep intuition about logic. Maybe it will eventually get there, but at 20x the footprint compared to writing the code yourself. For now I use Claude where it does excel, writing my unit testing. 🛠️👨🏻💻
People who say you can’t feel romantic attraction towards a computer have obviously never seen a Xserve G5 cluster in person. 🫠
UCLA won their first NCAA women’s basketball championship 🏀🏆
…the last time this university was in the news was when they settled a $6+ million lawsuit for allowing rampant antisemitism on campus. So yay for image progress I suppose.

Mr. Mastodon’s argument treats translation as a substitution problem (which machine translation used to be), but LLMs treat it as a comprehension and reconstruction problem. They have a context window and that is entirely new.
Comparing old, statistical machine translation here just doesn’t make sense because LLMs are capable of capturing nuance and know what a natural sentence sounds like. It’s 2026, not 2016, and the gap of degree has never been smaller. 👨🏻💻
Is stepping aside the best you could do? 🦋👨🏻💻
This No Kings protest last October was absolutely massive. You can tell organizers learned a lot from that because the planning around tomorrow’s event makes much more sense logistically. Getting the line going took quite a long while last time.
There are now more than a dozen meetup places for different contingents (climate, healthcare, women, etc) to merge with the main march. There is also a larger area being dedicated to accessibility needs protestors to join the flow (52nd-53rd between Broadway and 7th Ave).
Kīlauea has some major fountaining happening today 🏝️🌋😲

Finally beginning to see more NaviLens placards placed around subway stations in the city, just saw new ones at Columbus Circle station today. Obviously blind and partly sighted people will benefit the most, but they can also be used for providing alternative language guidance too. 💜🚇
