I am a Humanitarian, Software Architect/ Developer, Philosopher, Mathematician, Poet and love chess. Though I am not that good at chess I love to play. Most importantly, I am me, it would be nice if you could be you.

Rogue Project's Friendica is free to all that respect the TOS & Rules. I expect no payment for this service. If however you are inclined to make a contribution I appreciate it. Please, do not give money you do not have to spare. I can afford the costs of maintaining the instance without any contributions.

@SpaceLifeForm@infosec.exchange It did not come with a sim. The reason I know about it at all the issues I had to go through to get one for it.

@zer0unplanned Now the case of getting past Regional Restrictions may very well make it worth using a VPN, just do not expect any security from it.

@zer0unplanned I use the man pages on my system as well as the info pages on my system. The advantage to that is that man and info pages get altered from distro to distro to reflect their setup which can be significantly different from say Debian v Fedora. Web base man pages tend to be the generic pages that release with the software and will not have the nuances added by your distro. So it makes sense to me to use my local man and info and docs.

@zer0unplanned I really do not care for rapid games. For less experienced players it adds an element of luck which should not exist in chess. For experienced players it just says who has memorized the openings better. For me, chess is a thinking game, I typically play with the standard 30 minutes, and an additional 30 minutes after 40 moves if the clock allows for tournament settings. Most importantly though I hope you had fun! That is another important part of chess, remembering that it is fun.

@zer0unplanned Well my phone did not come with AI but Samsung updates have forced them on me. Now you know I am not Anti AI and this would not bother me if it was useful. But they are to lame to even realize some people work at night. So it is about as useful as sun screen at midnight 😉. As it is always scheduled to be active while I am sleeping and complains that I am up to late while at work.

@zer0unplanned Yes, everyone knows that OS X was based on NextStep. What a lot of people do not realize is that was the GUI influence. Since Darwin OS X was an adapted version of BSD. The graphical user interface (GUI) and the underlying Darwin operating system meshed together through a layered, object-oriented architecture where Cocoa served as the primary bridge, translating Objective-C user interface elements into instructions that the low-level Mach kernel and BSD subsystems could execute. +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | User Interface (Aqua / Application Windows / Finder) | +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Application Frameworks (Cocoa / Carbon / Java) | +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Graphics Engine (Quartz / Core Graphics / OpenGL) | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Darwin Core (Mach Kernel, BSD System, I/O Kit) | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Because their is a significant difference in many BSD base tools and Gnu/Linux Base tools even though they achieve the same results. They often use different flags, arguments and conventions. So you would not want your AI to not be able to distinguish between your OS X man pages v Fedora man pages etc.

@zer0unplanned I will likely drop around $5,000.00 USD or more on this build but if you just went out and bought an equivalent server it would set you back about $30,000.00 USD so it is not like I get nothing for my effort.

@zer0unplanned Tor over VPN is a total waste of time and creates far too much latency. If you feel you have to mask your use of Tor then just use a bridge. People seriously do not understand what VPNs are, what they were really made for, and why they are not great for security. Though they can get you past some regional blocks on the internet that is about the extent of their usefulness. Unless you are setting up your own VPN (which requires a publicly available server such as my VPS) to use the VPN for what it was actually made for. The VPN privacy thing is a scam even when most of the net was http and not https. The reason being is that just like when you leave a Tor exit for a http site the connection between the Tor exit and the site is not encrypted. The same applies to VPN. As soon as you connect to a site that is not encrypted from your VPN you lose encryption. Now, if you are connecting to a https site, then you do not need to the VPN for encryption and you are just subjecting yourself to unneeded latency for no reason. So-called security experts that are really just trying to sell you a service have totally misrepresented what a VPN is and its uses. I have entire books on VPNs if you are interested. OpenVPN also has some great documentation. The VPN for privacy is just smoke and mirrors that knowledgeable users do not fall for. It is like Anti-Virus on Gnu/Linux which is a scam as well, just to sell a product. I am not talking about Anti-Virus on servers to protect against their spreading viruses to MS/Windows machines connected to them such as Clam. I am talking about the BS anti-virus programs that really do nothing on Gnu/Linux there are other ways to protect yourself on Gnu/Linux that does not exist on Older MS/Windows but they are starting to add some features since MS/Windows Vista. Though most users disable these features on MS/Windows because they are inconvenient so they do not benefit from them. I am not implying that there are no security vulnerabilities on Gnu/Linus as there certainly are. They are just managed very differently than on MS/Windows. With stricter ACL then most home MS/Windows users have turned on and SELinux or Apparmor. And by just practicing good OPSEC. Keep in mind that most Anti-virus software is mostly required because of proprietary software. When source code is available and can be vetted you do not need Anti-virus to scan files looking for attacks. Because they are in a binary format you cannot vet. With Open Source Software you can just read the code, no scanners required.

@zer0unplanned Just to give you an idea, the PSU (Power Supply) alone will be around $700.00 USD , 256 GB DDR4 ECC memory around $1300.00 USD and about $200.00 USD for the Mother Board. I am not even going to look at potential AI GPU until late in the build. As their prices fluctuate significantly. Though am going to get 2 and they will mostly likely be around $1,800.00 USD a piece.

@zer0unplanned Yeah, I do not use AI for such things, it is still to early for that in my opinion. I basically use well trained (ones I train) LLMs to give expert advice. I cannot remember everything. But I can train my LLMs on my man pages, info pages and system documentation of what I use to get quick results. It is like a search that retrieves useful information without all the extra BS humans tend to include in their answers online.

@zer0unplanned I just bought two Intel Xeon E5-2699v4 2.2/55/2400 22C 145 (E5-2699v4) processors for a build I am about to do. It is going to take a while. I may wait for November to get the SSD/NVMe drives though as they are to high right now. The MB I am looking at only supports ddr4 so the current hikes do not affect me on that front for this build.

@coquillage I ran into Gemini randomly in its infancy in 2019. I was checking out browsers when I notice Lagrange. The protocol is very limiting though that is its appeal. I was even working on a module for Gemini support for lynx, I am sure it is around in my archives somewhere 😉.

@kajer@infosec.exchange I am aware that a third party password manager does not care about hidden fields. So seeing you know the site is using dubious practices, bring it to their attention or stop using them (if realistic to do so). I did not do a complete audit of the source you showed though if that is accurate they are retrieving your current password from their own records. This is entirely unacceptable. Even if they are using other means to verify it is a known device. What is to stop anyone with access to your device from logging in if they (the site maintainer) is providing your password for you? Yes, I would be concerned about this too.

Rogue Project's Friendica Online After about 8 hours or more of work I have finally gotten the Instance back online. Unfortunately there was some data loss. Though all user accounts are still available and everything appears to be up and running smoothly now. One huge hurdle I have had is that the developers of Friendica use Ubuntu by Canonical. I will not use anything from Canonical personally. I prefer the RHEL side of the spectrum. My workstations are Fedora which is RHEL upstream. My VPS for this Instance is Rocky Linux 9. The issue here is that Debian based distro's such as Ubuntu use AppArmor which is arguably less secure or at least less configurable than SELinux. So Friendica upstream has no concern for SELinux (to be fair they do warn that this is their position and only support Ubuntu so it is what it is) and how it effects a server using this heightened approach to security. It usually leaves me with headaches after every upgrade of Friendica. Not only because of their updates, but because of the updates Rocky Linux makes to SELinux Context causing me to have to mass re-label and configure files and directories. The changes are needed for security and not just designed to give me a headache . To any of my users that may have bumped into my Maintenance page the answer is no. No, I am not going to scrap Rogue Project's Friendica. Though it was tempting earlier today when I was looking at the hours of work I had to make sense of what was going on. The losses were minimal and I hope no one is to disappointed. At least this go around I did not lose the entire site and have to build over from scratch. I have made some changes that I hope to be worth the effort. I have gone away from using worker.php from the cron and now use daemon.php via systemd. This should help with the SELinux issues if nothing else because the context issue will not be so wide spread. Hopefully this also helps with the memory leak issues of the worker.php. It will show just how much of a change good or bad it will have in the future. As usual time will tell. I hope everyone has a great day! Take Care! @zer0unplanned Of course as usual my build will be with older tech as there is no way I could afford to do a build on this scale using modern tech. As it is it will likely exceed $5,000.00 USD by the time I am finished. With modern tech it would be more like $50,000.00 USD so that is out of my league budget wise.

@kajer@infosec.exchange Try this test, install a new browser, does not matter which one because you are only using it for this test, then go to the page. See if the password auto fills, with auto fill turned off on that browser. This assumes you are not using an external password manager that interfaces with your browser.
