So, my autistic folks, bit the bullet and called the mental health clinic to make an appointment. And once again bumped into the discrepancy that my scores and even the actual situation are pretty bad, but I'm pretty nonchalant talking about it, even joking with the nurse. Obviously, this causes all sorts of problems, as one's demeanor doesn't fit the seriousness of the matter.
I know part of it is that I just process stuff through humor, and some might say maybe it's camouflaging or whatnot, but another possibility hit me here. I've noticed that when I'm taken seriously in this kind of context (or any context for that matter), I get positively giddy, I'm so happy about it, because it doesn't happen that often. Is *that* the thing here? Because I sure didn't joke with the social worker who sneeringly did not take me seriously yesterday.
Are we just so starved of being taken seriously and listened to, that when someone finally does, no matter how su... banged up we are mentally, we get giddy with joy? Discuss.
