Canadian, tinker, 8-bitter, you-got-it-i-code-it, SL storyteller. He/Him. Though it should be obvious nothing I say reflects my employer or anyone else but me.

I might curse from time to time. I will use classic emoticons a LOT. ;)

We've had machine-learned OCR for a good 40 years. It didn't require massively parallel GPUs, huge datacenters, or even what we'd consider powerful machines to train, since they only needed a few hundred samples.

A common educational sample I did maybe 20 years ago was training to OCR digits. Any desktop could converge the training pretty quickly from a human comprehendible data set size. I don't remember how many neurons it used.. under 100 IIRC.

Not all machine learning is the overly massive stuff we see today. A lot of expert systems were very responsibly trained. It's the push for general that's killing everything.

Did some updates to my web port of Phoenix Wright Turnabout Storm. Final investigation phases are complete - over three and a half hours of video converted to game. Still a fair bit to go!

Took a bit of poking, but I got it to work using MAME. This patch unlocks Dali Llama and Karate Croc at startup, removes the name and password screens, and unlocks all moves automatically. For the US version of Brutal Paws of Fury for the Sega CD.

@VoltPaperScissors@chaos.social Nah, there was definitely no reversing, and they were always driving from the front. I suspect some kind of loose clutch that engages when the wheels experience increased force and spins the direction wheel. One would think I could have looked it up by now. :)

@VoltPaperScissors@chaos.social That's pretty cool! The tech of my childhood was bump'n'go. I never quite figured out how they work, though I was generally annoyed by how cheap it felt. Still, I wonder if I could make a go of understanding it today. I remember two wheels on a rotating disc. Would drive straight till it hit something, then the disc would turn, changing the direction of drive. But how I never learned.

I've always been a little annoyed by 'FYI' messages, which come off as "I know more than you, here's the proof".

I will now respond with "IAI" - I Am Informed, which suitably relieves of any responsibility for the information while being just as dismissive.

I feel much better about this. ;)

Watching the original He-Man... it's one of the episodes that used to bug me as a kid. "Three on a Dare" - ignoring the side plots about kids and dares, the primary push for He-Man was to break into Snake Mountain and steal rainbow crystals from Skeletor. He chose to sneak in, and attempt to steal the crystals before Skeletor noticed.

Bad guy or not, this is one of the stories where the bad guy was just minding his own business, and the good guys were actually the ones planning nonsense.

Sure, he kidnapped Teela and He-Man happened to be there to save her, but that was luck and doesn't redeem the original intent.

Ah, nice, RomHacking.net took my patch. Now people can at least find it.

Wasn't there something about that site closing a year or so ago?

Nice to see that all cell phone companies are out to scam you.

Long ago Foxx and I left AT&T because there was no coverage at our new place. A couple months later we BOTH got "overage charges" on accounts that didn't exist. They were small - both were 25 cents. It took 90 minutes to get AT&T to cancel them. Imagine what a company that size earns just charging people 25 cent nonsense charges that people just pay cause it's easier?

I switched to T-Mobile (cause of the Sidekick - miss that phone!). I liked them and kept them for ages. I finally had to cancel it last year cause I no longer had a US bank to pay them from, and Canadian accounts weren't allowed. And today, 14 months later, they tell me I still owe them $8. After an hour we pieced together that after I cancelled but before they shut it off, they raised my plan's price for that last 30 days (which I had to pay for despite having no SIM), and they let it sit till today.

So rude. I would have happily paid it A YEAR AGO.

If all you're going to do is shrink wrap it, and put it in a plastic case for display, why don't you just 3d print a replica, put a nice new sticker on it, and display that?
