this IRL protest ad against Facebook's spyware glasses is fantastic. design is based on They Live!, one of my favourite movies, and one that is more accurate than ever given the extent to which billionaire scumbags fuck with our lives. “Billionaires could fund cures for cancer — so why are they funding glasses for perverts instead?" https://hyperallergic.com/guerrilla-london-bus-ads-mock-kylie-jenners-meta-glasses-campaign/

pro-tip to folks doing backend: redis is not a long-term storage database. don't use it for persistent data, even if you can.

just spent the last couple hours debugging a prod game failure because the long-term key size for the game finally exceeded system RAM size, and then it just got in a loop where it would get killed, restart, try to load all the data, run out of RAM, and get killed again.

just use postgres, y'all. don't do this.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink yep! we absolutely do need to completely dismantle capitalism and personally concentrated power first. without doing that, all of this is just dystopia that'll keep growing in scope. everyone likes playing 40k because of how awful the universe is, but we definitely don't want to build that galaxy. 😅

@ljwrites@writeout.ink I'd agree they're very different. I think that's why I'm drawn to well-written immortal characters though, exploring the ideas around outliving your society and place in it, how that affects you as time goes on, etc. Frieren explores this in a really gentle way, while something like Dragonoak runs a whole gamut of experience, and I find both really interesting. the biggest problem I find with lots of authors who create immortal characters is they don't even bother to think about this.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink yeah. I grew up reading spec fic, and so I love any work that fully develops their characters and explores what their universe means for them. I feel like if you craft an intricate world and don't explore the ramifications of your choices, you're doing yourself and your readers a big disservice. and really, even if it is a power fantasy, you should dig into what that means psychologically for your characters, how it changes them, etc. the dynamics of power are worth examining!

it's never been a better time to switch to an editor that isn't run by one of the most abusive companies in the world. zed has been treating me well for a while now, and I do recommend it.

one of my favourite games I ever worked on was Blur in 2010. made by Bizarre Creations (Project Gotham, etc), it was a lovely game designed to be a smooth playing arcade racer with real cars, but with powerups and weapons like Mario Kart. it was a delight to play, and I was super proud to have worked on it.

Activision killed it by launching it the same week as Disney's Split/Second, with no advertising. it was infuriating. servers were shut down in 2013.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink yeah! if we ever get functional immortality, it's super likely to happen! it'll be a whole psychological thing for people to work through, and fiction should explore it! or like... what about degenerative brain disorders like parkinsons, imagine being an immortal child of an immortal parent who needs assistance and doesn't remember who you are. there's so many dynamics that our society ignores dealing with by just waiting for people to die, that we'd have to actually work through.

@domo for a long time I considered myself binary trans (now I don't even believe that exists, but that's another story), but I've never once been able to pass in my life. it's not just a rejection on enbies, (although they're the most obvious target of this nonsense). it's a denial all trans existence. asking pronouns should be the default. :ms_angry_steam:

@dkub@woof.group yeah, and every major release they massively improve things and add great new features and stuff. their current devs are definitely the smartest people working in databases in the world right now, there's so little reason to ever do anything else at this point.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink hahahaha yeah well we're pretty far out from that happening in my lifetime, unfortunately for me. but also, I can't imagine people will stop procreating, it may just be on a totally different timeframe, so I expect there will forever be this division in opinions. it's another thing I've seen good exploration of in fiction, characters who chased immortality and then after living it for a few centuries / millenium drastically changed their minds. all very fascinating!

@ljwrites@writeout.ink yeah I think if we develop immortality tech before we start colonizing the solar system, things would get real bad real fast. I think as long as younger generations have room to leave and expand and grow it'd eventually sort itself out, but the first few centuries are likely to be extremely terrible. 😅 I'd still choose to ride it out to get to our galactic future though. with immortality comes true space exploration for everyone, and that is SO exciting to me.
