Today we had a fire alarm in the office. A colleague wrote to a Slack channel 'Fire alarm in the office building', to start a thread if somebody knows any details. We have AI assistant Glean integrated into the Slack, and it answered privately to her: "today's siren is just a scheduled test and you do not need to leave your workplace". It was not a test or a drill, it was a real fire alarm. Someday, AI will kill us.

Thanks to https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8369517, I can now close several long-standing issues in #IntelliJIDEA bug tracker as 'third-party issue'. People reported that IntelliJ erroneously highlights compilable code as red. But it was not our mistake. The code in question should not be compilable, according to the specification! This is fixed in Java 26, so your code may become broken there.

@nd of course, the employee wrote this while already staying at the meeting point outside the building. I did not say that she wrote this before the evacuation.

@metacosm@mastodon.social nobody asked the AI input at all. It just was configured in the particular channel to answer automatically if it thinks it can help faster than fellow humans (sometimes people actually ask something which was asked before, so AI could be helpful). The configuration will be adjusted after this incident.

@betalars @daniel_bohrer @Matt_999 the 'siren test' AI referring to is exactly that. It's not a drill. The planned siren test may take several hours of occasional alarms, and it doesn't mean that you should leave the building every time you hear it. We had one a few months ago. Probably AI found that announcement in the chat history and assumed that it is related to today's alarm.

Now, you'll get an inspection warning with a quick-fix proposing to use the deconstruction pattern! void print(List list) { for (Point(int x, int y) : list) { System.out.println(x + ":" + y); } }

@TheDonRaab @stuartmarks I was going to advice you to do this, but you have found it by yourself 🙂 On our side, it's a heuristic, an assumption that all the anonymous classes are named using ever increasing sufficient. So we just look for a second anonymous class.

@majick well, in our case there were definitely cases of 'scheduled alarm maintenance'. In that time, random alarms occurred many times during two or three hours. Evacuating after every single of them would mean nobody is doing the actual work during the good part of the day.

@the_moep @taschenorakel I've seen a backend Java project importing javafx library. The sole reason was that it contains a Pair type, and somebody depended on it when JavaFX was a part of the platform. https://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/javafx/api/javafx/util/Pair.html

Replying to
@taschenorakel it's Kotlin, but your question is very valid. Declaring a custom data class is a one-liner, but people still use the Pair class from the standard library, because it's already there. Generic Pair class is a mistake. It promotes lazy programming. Luckily Java doesn't have it.

LLMs can replace a human translator in many cases, but this level of quality is still impossible for LLMs out-of-the-box 😄

Fun fact: #IntelliJIDEA still supports this feature! Use language level 20 (Preview) (which is not officially supported anymore). Write code like: import java.util.List; class Test { record Point(int x, int y) { } void print(List list) { for (Point point : list) { int x = point.x(); int y = point.y(); System.out.println(x + ":" + y); } } }
