@verge@mastodon.social Mastodon's "Algorithm" is the one that works. It's the one I seem to recall Facebook used to have, in fact. It's simple: Merge followed stuff, sort by date, display. That's it. You know how much R & D it takes to work out that algorithm? None. It's just the way things are obviously done if they've been done right. If not, fix it. It's really that simple. It really is.

@fsinn@mas.to Besides the idiocy of believing in "biblical prophecy" to begin with, anyone who *believes* in "Armageddon" and *wants* it to happen and wants to help bring it about? Fuck Them. Fuck Them All.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I'm baffled by the apocalypse fetish. Seriously - how the hell is it even remotely possible that a large subset of the American population is rooting and praying for a violent horrific end of the world when it's turned into some kind of cosmic battle-ground. How is it possible that there are people who think about that and say "Oh Hell Yea, Sign My World Up!". I seem to recall the good guys stopping the apocalypse being a big theme in movie plots for most of my life.... Did Evangelicals watching those same movies feel sad that the world *didn't* end? I really really don't understand the psychological attraction. The best I can come up with is it absolves them of any responsibility or duty to think about the future 'cause the future is scary and they take comfort in the idea that there won't *be* a future?

I'll be occupying my time during the upcoming summer break from work with a bit of gardening - a large maple tree was just taken down at the rear of the property leaving a huge stump and some torn up de-landscaped area around it. I have several types of peppers and tomatoes as well as broccoli waiting to be moved outdoors ---- And lots and lots of mushroom liquid cultures in an ever growing collection. What's odd is that I can't find any kind of USDA climate zone table for mushrooms. I know shiitake will grow here happily, and I know that lions main should be fine. Less sure about wine-caps and Agaricus Bisporus. I *think* if I get them established in the soil they should persist here in zone 5b, but can't find any actual reference to consult. I've got four different oyster mushroom types to try - no clue if any will make a re-appearance next year once established. That seems strange, but then mushroom cultivation in general beyond agaricus is actually pretty new. I remember reading books as a kid from the 40's, 50's, and maybe even early 60's that referred to "the cultivated mushroom" and there was literally only one cultivated mushroom species at the time, at least in the western world. #mycology #mushrooms #gardening #madisonwi

Yes! It has strawberries! I wasn't sure any had managed to root before being washed off since the wild strawberry seeds take quite some time to germinate (a couple weeks compared to three or four days for the clover), and takes another week or more before there's a distinct leaf that identifies it as "not clover". But I've *Finally* spotted at least three of the little guys, scanning with a magnifying glass. The seed-packet instructions and most guides suggest stratifying strawberry seeds in media in the fridge for a month, so I wasn't even sure if they'd take to this treatment at all, let alone manage to get rooted through the burlap and not get washed off the vertical sides.

@cmconseils Theory: Ad Blockers are a good thing for the advertising industry, YouTube included, because it removes us -- the folks who respond negatively to ads (thus bad for the company/brand/service if we see or hear them, better off that we *might* see the product on a shelf without already hating it) from the mix while keeping things seamless - we can share links to content with others and view links to content they send us - but we just never realize or think about the fact that "everyone else" is seeing (and maybe even paying attention to) ads inserted. Everyone that it offends has opted out, and those that haven't have gotten used to it, some might even enjoy it, and many actually pay attention to the ads as if they were actual content.

I've suddenly found a whole new kingdom of life to obsess about growing. I've now got an absurd collection of #mushroom cultivation supplies coming from Amazon. All because a fungus added itself to my little mound planting, colonizing the whole hill from top to bottom all the way around, is loving life, and is clearly not bothering the plants one bit. So I'll pasteurize the soil and bark for the next mound and stuff in a bunch of spawn for oysters or shiitake or both and hopefully they can persist for a few years and be coaxed into fruiting with sufficient watering and appropriate temperatures. every so often. #houseplants #mushrooms

The pull of the #mushroom cultivation rabbit-hole is profound.

You can grow oysters on cardboard? Seriously? Cardboard?

I have access to an infinite supply of cardboard + all sorts of empty food-grade containers I can divert from recycling every day.

And I have quite a number of chefs I can hand any mushroom producing container to once it starts fruiting.

Oh Hell Yea!

@verge@mastodon.social Huh. Okay. I blocked all Meta products long ago. If your feed isn't reverse chronological, and isn't composed only of the people/groups/tags that I'm actually following, then I won't use your product. If you fail to do that but manage to keep me around 'cause "I need to keep in touch with folks that are only here", and then start shoving MAGA and J.D. F***ing Vance posts at me even after I spend hours a day for days both blocking and reporting every single one? Oh, then I really don't *want* to stay in touch with anyone that's there. No, I haven't heard from any of the folks I only knew there who were friends in cities back. That's fine. Maybe I will some day, maybe I won't. That's fine. But Seriously, I won't ever use any "social media" platform unless the "algorithm" is, very explicitly, either reverse chronological or chronological since last viewed content from individuals or groups/pages/feeds that I actually chose to follow. Any "best of", "recommended", or anything else. Any re-ordering that's out of chronological order, and I'm done. Out.

@TedTodorov@mastodon.social @noah@mastodon.art And not a claim anyone would be likely to make either, I'd expect. Seriously, I've never heard a single person ever try to claim that internal combustion was "better" in any way. EDIT: On further thought, I'm sure those people *do* exist... but it'd be like trying to defend vacuum tubes and claiming they are somehow superior to solid state for building computers. No matter how dumb the argument, someone somewhere is probably making it.

Anyone else find clips of "USA! USA!" chants at the Olympics chilling?

I heard that at least three times as sound-bites on NPR, and each time I thought "Yikes", and "1936".

Audio stuff is different - I "hear" ads on NPR all the time... except they're ads, so I'm not really *hearing* them because they just become something I'm generally aware is happening but that I tune out. That's just how human brains *work*, right? I have things I wanna think about so until there's a change in sound that cues me in that we're back to real content, I just tune out could almost never tell you what product and/or service any of those ads were for or what was said in them.

So basically Trump wants to destroy anything America achieved during the Obama and Biden administrations *and* wreck the future just so that in his fuzzy fantasy his time will have been a "high point"? Is that what's going on here?

Wow. I almost wound up not filing my taxes this year.

H&R Block's site is filled with promotions and gotcha paid stuff that you have to opt out of over and over again while going through filing steps.

I'd gotten to what *looked* like a step you couldn't pass without buying an optional service. And so I thought I was done.

Finally realized after getting a few "let's finish" emails that that step *could* be passed without buying something (just a different design and color choices for the "buyme" clicks so it looked like the first was auto-selected).

After passing this point finally, there were many more steps and many more promotions to opt out of, but finally it's done.

So with only three days left, I NOW have my taxes filed and got through it without being forced to purchase anything.

Those ads almost cost me over $600.

I'm trying to watch "Project Hail Mary". I'm one minute in and considering bailing already: The ship isn't in freefall. The dude's even struggling within to first few seconds of the film to climb ladders. Wow. They REALLY fucked it up. Which is rather shocking because I heard rave reviews on NPR -- nobody bothered to mention that they couldn't even figure out how to have it set in freefall like the book. Wow.

Alright. They didn't ignore freefall and rotational pseudo-gravity *entirely* in Project Hail Mary -- they just did the worst possible job with it.

That would be bad enough in any film, but these were *major* parts of the plot and major challenges worked around in the story!

And they just side-step it all entirely -- it's like there's a narrative "gravity switch" where sometimes things just "float" and usually not... and down is always down.

Wow. Either Tylenol or Ibuprofen actually work. Not sure which, but one of the above very much does relieve pain very much quicker and more effectively than I recalled.

I woke up with bad neck pain a couple nights ago, and it's stuck around ever since with a headache to keep it company.

I'd spent a few hours off and on in the shower under hot water that failed to help in any real way for a day and a half.

I *finally* walked to the grocery store and got a bottle each of Ibuprofen and Tylenol, took one of each and noted the time... I figured if I didn't notice anything improving in the next half hour, I'd climb back into the shower.

15 minutes later, feeling noticeable less pain and by 20 minutes no neck pain (or headache) left at all... Huh.

That's actually pretty darn amazing.

An odd glitch on my laptop that has persisted for multiple reboots over multiple days now: A short clip of audio, a female voice saying "and we have names for him" keeps playing... randomly... for multiple days now. At first I thought it was coming from a browser tab... had to be, right? I'm now down to five open browser tabs. All but one are specifically muted (though they don't play audio). And yet every so often without warning I get "and we have names for him" lady. I'd really love to know A) what the heck is going on here so I could fix it. and B) the context of those words... As a writing prompt I can see so many ways to go with that: "And we have names for him". It's so ambiguous. I'd love to know what came before "And", who he is, etc. Also what is going on with Debian+Gnome+Firefox that gives me the names lady. #Linux #Debian #Gnome #Firefox

@MCDuncanLab@mstdn.social Thanks for the note on the oysters - I ended up going to I-Naturalist and found that the ones I wanna try already live here. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy. I'm gonna let lion's mane and shiitake each have a log of their own and let them fight for the stump. And I'm planning to de-pot all of my vegetables (that originally were going to be balcony plants) before I move them out, and put them in burlap mounds/balls, half with button mushroom spawn added to a wood-chip/bark and compost mix, and the other half with wine-cap spawn. The inspiration for trying to grow mushrooms was this mound/blob planting, now about two months old, that is happily filled with shaggy ink-caps. The plants love their fungus friend and the tree's never been happier. So I decided I wanna pick what species lives in the next planting like this I do.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I was just doing a search for stuff on YouTube and realized that I basically *always* filter for "Over 20 minutes" and pretty much no longer see anything shorter in search results. I've basically been doing that since they introduced "Shorts". I don't look at unfiltered YouTube search results at all anymore 'cause there will be tons of "Shorts".

@futurebird@sauropods.win I noticed at some point that the kid who occasionally works at the corner grocery heard "a couple of" as a nonspecific quantity. He would always ask "so how many?". I found this fascinated and have tended to buy stuff in pairs ever since. He now assumes I mean two, but always double checks. "And a couple avocados please" "So is two okay?" .... I've bit my tongue so many times to stop from asking: "If the next customers through that door happen to be a couple who walk in together holding hands, how many people would they be?"
