the main thing making me support right-to-repair laws is that I need to make my car’s manufacturer give me whatever horrific software is running the touchscreen so I can rewrite it

hey it’s Trans Day of Visibility. I have the luxury of being fine with the gender I got but I have friends who’ve transitioned and am proud of them for being themselves. the world is a better place when people have that freedom. support trans rights.
back in Georgia and went to get drinks at the grocery store but was politely informed that they couldn’t sell me alcohol because it’s before noon on a Sunday. had completely forgotten that it’s a little bit the early twentieth century here.
noticed that the ad blocker I’d been using was somehow using 1GB+ of memory so I broke out the Safari content-blocker docs and the web inspector and made my own. now almost every site I regularly visit is way better behaved, including some the old blocker did nothing for. sometimes software is good.
it’s inconvenient not having a mic for multiplayer games but I appreciate when they give you built-in mechanics that let you get a point across anyway. in Marathon the other day I was peacefully scrounging when somebody snuck up on me + got instantly downed by the claymore I happened to have set up. _they_ had a mic and said “you’re a son of a bitch, you know that”, to which I could only respond “yes.” “friendly.” as I finished them off
every now and then I take soup out of the microwave just before discovering that the bowl is too hot to hold, basically administering myself a gom jabbar test of “keep holding long enough to carefully put down, or don’t”
@schwa@mastodon.social that’s the only software in the entire car that works right. I started the car and tried to adjust the temperature and it somehow missed the touch-up so it just kept adjusting. absurd
been using Cinema 4D as my 3D software for 25 years but it is starting to seriously try my patience. crashes, hangs, 3+ different and uniquely obstreperous node-graph UIs… and they no longer even offer perpetual licenses, just $800+/yr subscriptions. not going to use Blender (it’s Blender) but am increasingly tempted to switch to full-time Houdini.
@schwa@mastodon.social it’s always been capable and powerful and has only gotten more so; the UI has always been bad and has not gotten appreciably less bad
@tg@indieweb.social congrats on the Current launch—it’s ambitious and I like the philosophy behind it. some feedback, having used it for a bit:
- I would like a way to control the article and feed text sizes separately—if I make articles comfortable to read then the feed text is too small
- the Feedbin icon when I signed into it looked strangely pixelated
- for articles that embed video players, it would be helpful to suppress autoplay
- the intro text has a bunch of straight apostrophes which could use curling
