Born in a blizzard, grew to 6'2" tall.

Give me your bleeps, your bloops,
Your muddled beats yearning to breathe free,
The wretched debris of your sonic shore.

This phenomenon has been around for a long time, but it is still psychically jarring that when I plug my phone into my computer with a cable to sync some music, it says, enter your password to use "accessory." The notion that the phone is primary and the computer is secondary, an "accessory" to the phone, is wildly backwards.

The phone is the passive consumption device. Not inherrently bad, of course. I need my info. But the computer. Holy crap. That is The Thing. A place for computational creativity. That is the Main Source, ayo.

@sean_ae@post.lurk.org @c_reider@sonomu.club as someone who grew up in '80s WI, it is kinda hard to describe how off this feels just cuz he sings a handful words wrong 😆

@sideb0ard@post.lurk.org recommended this book in at a Cycling '74 Office Hours video stream. got a copy through my library and been messing around with p5.js and the concepts in the book.

i have been wanting to experiment with the p5.js library for creating visuals and animations in a browser, but find it hard to relate to most of the imagery you see in p5 tutorials. i'm good with the code side, but need a little inspiration in the visual arena.

i think this book provides exactly what i was looking for by developing a visual framework that is super fun for developing small visual concepts.

@sean_ae@post.lurk.org @trashpandaqc@mastodon.online @emenel@post.lurk.org @tsrono@mastodon.social the entire concept of "middlemen" and "removing the middleman" seems like a completely disingenuous sales con. it is a rather gross reduction of real human beings fulfilling meaningful roles. it is not right that some individuals got labeled expendable with the "middleman" boogeyman term because it reduces their life's work, their contribution to a scene, their livelihood, etc, to something to always and only be detested. in fact, that labor is real, requires its own forms of talent and is critical.

once upon a time "DIY" didn't seem to be a genre term. it really just meant, "i like fixing my own stuff, like the (non-metaphorical) plumbing"

Been messing around with curved shapes in p5.js using the bezierVertex() function. I made myself a little exploration tool so I could drag the control points around and see how the curve edges behave.

The orientation feels kinda off to me, though. In this example, the red dots represent the shape's vertices/anchor nodes (with a north, south east, west orientation). The green dots are the Bezier control points. It feels strange that the green control points are paired together by edge rather than by anchor nodes. I get why based on how the library functions, but it is an interesting example of how the build vs. use perspectives are inverted.

@Mrabazeley @sean_ae @Glubhorn9 @Kama11 sorry for the late entry (long work day in midwester U.S.)

i'm also not a super duper max user, but i can't echo everyone's comments enough: pick a project and let it's goals drive what you seek out. also, i would recommend trying to get a sense for which of the myriad ways of learning work for you. for example:

  1. Max embedded documentation in the app itself (help files, tutorials)
  2. same Max docs on the web (sometimes it is nice not having a bajillion Max windows open)
  3. YouTube videos
  4. forums: i like the ones on Cycling74's site and lines and the Max Discord server

if you can get down with some really old school YouTube videos, i think you can't beat Delicious Max and Baz Tutorials as the starting point. both of them are all about building functional projects (Delicious) or snippets (Baz)

final recommendation since you mentioned generative sequencers: Gregory Taylor's book Step by Step

sometimes you have to reach deep into childhood jingles for your debugging print statements just to summon some appropriately deep magic to get the test suite to pass.
