@badbede@deacon.social last summer I did an independent study on the theology of John Wesley. Read and reflected on five sermons a week. Pretty quick pace. I was skeptical about Wesley’s holiness being too focused on orthopraxy, on doing the right thing. Reading Wesley brought me on board with his perspective, that complete holiness is the goal and we should not be dissuaded from seeking it out by “practical” concerns. Wesley was a pastor first. It’s very clear to me that his heart came from 1) seeing people suffer under sin and 2) wanting people to be free of that suffering. That’s the central pillar of his holiness focus, simple charity and not wanting people to suffer. I think we make truce with sin in our life because we misapprehend how badly sin wants to destroy us, to kill us. Have you seen or read the anime/manga Frieren? Don’t know if you’re a Japan fan.

@badbede@deacon.social there’s a plot line where demons (monsters that look like humans with horns and can speak well) come under banner of truce and are treated like diplomats by the people who run the city, albeit reluctantly. The whole thing is an act, to undermine the defenses and allow demons to overrun the city. So the metaphor is that, sin will only come under flag of truce to attempt to undermine us from within. It’s a good show, the anime is a wonderful adaptation and the English language voices are very good. The Wesleyan perspective was a very helpful corrective. So much of, you know, fundamentalist sweaty tent revival preaching against sinners and sinfulness takes the note of “you sinners disgust me” instead of “this drinking will destroy you and you are precious to God, and He won’t let you go without a fight, so here I am imploring you ‘be reconciled to Christ!’”

If you ever feel like you’re not holy enough, remember this anecdote about St Teresa of Avila.

While attempting to cross a dangerous river with her donkey cart, of the cables snapped and allowed all their supplies to be washed away. Angry and frustrated, she went under a tree to meditate. The Lord told her that this hardship was a sign of his loving friendship. Her reply?

“Well, no wonder you have so few friends, then!”

@thorne @Remittancegirl @cstross they decline aid from the CTC, concerned that trans people may have had a hand in preparing or transporting it.

@iFixit my favorite fix was when I was able to replace the battery and upgrade the ram to keep using a computer that I had been using for three years at that point.

@Techaltar@mas.to it’s because of windows. Windows is almost impossible to use with 8gb of ram

@vwbusguy@mastodon.online @MichelPatrice@jasette.facil.services having tried to use proton docs to collaborate on household stuff with my wife, it’s very simple. I’m not exactly sure why proton is reinventing the wheel here.

@markusr@mastodon.social @Techaltar@mas.to I guess if windows can't handle all those things being open, but OSs like linux and macos can, then that sort of makes my point. Like people don't really use just one program at a time all the time.
