Casually patching the homelab via a laptop while on vacation. I'm glad I wasn't doing so on my phone instead.

I switched to Tidal for music and AntennaPod for podcasts and have been pretty happy.
I selfhosted something to sync progress across devices (gPodder), which might be more than non techy folks want to mess with.

Yes - the app is what sets up the connection to the server to receive the notifications. You can self host or use the first party service.
Some things also can integrate - my primary use is for more reliable notifications from Matrix/Element X. I believe Tusky also uses it when available.

Just migrated off of my private self hosted gitlab instance to a self hosted Forgejo instance. So far so good - it was super easy. And I'm extra glad I did so having read that.

I have a Reolink PoE doorbell camera that I use with frigate and have been very happy with it (installed around a year). I limit its traffic to the local network since it does phone home.
Frigate does local object detection. I use a Coral Tensor m.2 card for it, but there is support for GPU and CPU detectors as well.
Frigate also integrates into home assistant and supports a pretty big variety of cameras. I have a hikvision one in a different area of the house that feeds into frigate as well.

I used a 3rd party tool that was recommended by Tidal to migrate to Tidal. It was paid over a certain number of tracks, but was a smooth experience. I believe they support other sources/destinations as well.

I think you'd have to use the chromecast functionality of the Google home device to play audio from it, but I don't own any, so don't know for sure.
