Not defending Trump, just explaining how maps are made.

Your claims are an oversimplification. Proton has annual third party audits, which it passes. It also had to turn over logs but couldn't because they didn't exist, as verified by court documents.
I'm not saying VPNs are a magic bullet, and many of your arguments are very sound. I just dont agree with your whole premise.

Click a button to be 'reasonably' anonymous (for most people's needs at least), or whatever your solution.
Of course if you have an elevated risk profile, you need additional steps. IMO, if you're on the government radar, you shouldn't be using ANY tech/internet platforms.

You're arguing just to argue. Re-read what I posted. That's exactly what I said, and in fact how it works...
I just pulled up gmaps on mexico vpn (and private session to avoid cached tiles) and it shows Golfo de México. Same with Canada.
I did the same with Apple Maps and it shows the localized name: Gulf of Mexico.
I work in the industry, we don't get to arbitrarily decide what names to show.

My point is, no matter how stupid the decision to change the name is, it *is* an officially recognized name change.
