Retired #DylanLang, #CommonLisp, #GoLang hacker. I mostly post here about #DylanLang or random things I find amusing, sometimes the dumpster fire of US politics.

Other interests include #Go / #baduk / #weiqi and the #SmallWeb, i.e. getting away from the Big Tech social media nightmare. http://yhoti.org is an idea I'm mulling over.

I generally don't follow people who boost a lot more than they post original content. Let the hashtags do the work. Oooohhm.

@hajovonta@mastodon.online @simon_brooke@mastodon.scot (reduce #'eq '(x x x)) -> NIL You really have to do something like (reduce (lambda (a b) (and (eq a b) a)) args) which fails for `(nil nil nil), or better (every (lambda (a) (eq a (car args))) (rest args)) Both are a little annoying. I prefer n-ary functions. That said, #DylanLang makes all of the comparison functions binary and I don't remember ever needing an n-ary version. But if there's no performance penalty I say go for it.

@66@functional.cafe @aartaka@merveilles.town In effect you seem to name things for the result rather than for the action that is performed. Both ways are valid I suppose, but frequently we name the result by storing it in a local variable so for me that's where the noun comes in. let sum = add(x, y, z); But there are a lot of subtleties in naming. For example, when I store a value in a class slot I might name the "getter" function as a noun to indicate that there is no computation being done. Adding "get" adds nothing. For example, (socket-descriptor socket) instead of (get-socket-descriptor socket). I've also seen naming like this: (descriptor-of socket) but have never used it myself. Somewhat related, I read https://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2006/03/execution-in-kingdom-of-nouns.html years ago and remember agreeing with it. It's a fun read if nothing else.

It's 2026 and US banks are still sending 1099-INT (interest income reports) in envelopes that need instructions on how to open them. 🙀 I'm sure there must be some mildly amusing tech story behind why this behavior persists.

@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party I admit I haven't tried the CL LSP implementation...Alive for VS Code I think. Have you tried it? I would love to see how far a really good implementation of LSP and DAP could go and whether they could get close to SLIME+Emacs in functionality. From what I've gleaned from the CL chat rooms I don't get the impression that Alive is quite there yet. But there's a lot of Emacs bias so it's hard to know people are giving Alive a fair shake.

@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party It's a shame because I think making a really good LSP+DAP backend for a really popular editor like VS Code could bring more people to Lisp. (Or...maybe that's the point...to keep Lisp away from the masses. :blobcatthink: ) Anyway, my cynicism aside, I'd be curious to hear how well Alive works out for you.

@thezerobit@anticapitalist.party I work on LSP for #DylanLang sometimes. If I ever give up on Dylan maybe I'll work on similar things for CL and try to make them usable.

@weekend_editor@mathstodon.xyz @CuratedHackerNews@mastodon.social @DylanLang@fosstodon.org From what I can tell based on the name and the image (there's no doc?) what this is doing is looking at each symbol in the current environment and deciding how to highlight it based on its "kind". Is it a function? Make it blue. Is it a special form? Make it purple. etc. (But a brief look at the elisp code reveals long lists of hard-coded symbol names, so I dunno.) Whereas Dylan's optimization coloring is, as you say, showing how method dispatch is optimized or not. Compiler inlined the code of the exact method? Make it dark grey. Method will be selected at run time? Make it red. etc. So very different beasts but the name Semantic Coloring definitely has the same ring to it. https://opendylan.org/getting-started-ide/coloring.html #DylanLang

@burnoutqueen@todon.nl You kind of have to understand there's a little context to what she said. IF USAmerica is going to bomb the shit out of Iran, it should have a plan other than "hope someone better takes control when the bombing is over" or "this is just payment for your TrumpCoin bribes".
