text of the short talk i gave today at the Temple U electronics faire:
The Media Archaeology Lab at CU Boulder is by necessity a site of continual repair. Our mission, broadly speaking, is to give hands-on access to functional, obsolete technologies to anyone who visits. To do that, we have to keep those obsolete technologies functional. And when I say we, I often mean me but I always mean the community of collaborators and knowledge holders that the MAL has become.
I have managed the day-to-day operations in the MAL to ever-greater degree over the past 9 and a half years, and often find myself in charge of either doing or coordinating repairs on everything from typewriters to 40 year old desktop computers to game consoles. But the lab constitutes a network of connections, both near and far, both more and less involved. I can and do call on all of that generously given information and time constantly.
i am in San Diego doing some work on an experimental metal patination project using organic materials and electricity and some of the results are incredible... this is salted mushroom.
Pippin Barr has collected all his old terrible game ideas from twitter into a blog post and it's fantastic https://pippinbarr.com/words/2026/03/game-ideas/
happy rex manning day to everyone else whose entire sense of style as a teen was shaped by Robin Tunney shaving her head on camera
today's Thing What Makes Me Madder Than Hell is people believing with their whole hearts that they can't draw because they've been conditioned to see the output of their own hands through a narrow and rigid set of fairly arbitrary rules
gotta make sure i have all the conference essentials... tablet, stylus, adapters, spare battery, soldering iron, bag full of broken tech
submitted my favorite of my films to a festival for the first time in ages so thought i'd share it here, too. it's 3d printed and i made it when i was, shock and surprise, mad about something https://vimeo.com/114086015
dinacon continues to be the best, most productive thing I've ever done. my Workshop Workshop for Workshopping Workshops zine, which started development there last summer, has been published in a journal https://journals.library.unt.edu/index.php/unbound/article/view/390
i am not that kind of doctor and the MAL is not that kind of lab but the combination of those titles means we get very funny spam. in today's, some guy wants to come inspect my microscope.
