@tajoma@critter.cafe if you don't have studio speakers perhaps you could find an impulse response somewhere that recreates this sort of acoustic (for use with convolution reverb). i'd help capture one but i don't have speakers in the new house —w—

@tajoma@critter.cafe there are so many variables at play, you probably won't be able to recreate the exact effect though,, but i'd say still play around with it because it's fun! worst case you'll get a totally original sound, which would be really cool too

@tajoma@critter.cafe i did learn about this technique from c418 btw https://c418.org/albums/excursions/ so it's very likely he used it in Minecraft, too. that's where my hunch comes from! (and also years of living at my parents' house, recording gameplay while playing on speakers because it was too hot to wear headphones lol, i just happen to know how it sounds more or less)

part of me feels like this might not have been downsampled, but rather played on speakers in a room and then recorded back. the reverb on that piano sounds very room-like, and the EQing seems kinda complex, like there are some resonances happening in the bass that are common when playing music on large speakers that are a bit hard to capture artificially
don't forget about the tremolo on the piano, it adds a lot of character and subtle rhythm

@tajoma@critter.cafe honestly kinda hard to tell, i'd guess both the mic and speakers are pretty decent, that's just the way they come through—but the speakers were definitely placed some space away from the mic to generate the reverb, and also i'd try EQing the mic recording a bit to accentuate the bass

re if err != nil, i've found the same to be true for me! it's honestly not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be.
makes me wonder if a lot of the noise isn't just opinions of Rust users who have never written any Go...
the one thing i like in the language design of if err != nil is that it completely sidesteps having to design broad standard librarby types like Result with lots of little utility functions like map, map_err, ok, ok_or_else etc.
all of which turn out to form their own little DSL for handling errors,, which is an addition over the dum brain syntax of just using match and if let
whereas in Go there is only one way to do it—an if statement!
and i think that's pretty elegant :)

@DenJohn @freeplay from what i've seen, games getting minimised when you tab out is an annoyingly common feature of windowing libraries like SDL or GLFW, where often the game has to explicitly opt out of the default """sane""" behaviour
i presume it used to make sense when exclusive fullscreen mode was a thing [still is on Windows...] but it does not make any sense on Linux Wayland —w—
i actually wrote a Minecraft mod that would make GLFW stop doing this because it pissed me off hard

air coolers can cool these things fine and require less maintenance so i've been wondering if there's any reason you'd wanna pick a water cooler other than the Cool factor
