@MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz I quite regularly recommend Penelope Maddy's paper "What do we want a foundation to to: comparing set-theoretic, category-theoretic, and univalent approaches" is the most stimulating piece on the concept of "foundations" I've read to date. I don't agree with all the conclusions, but I agree that "There isn’t a unified concept of
‘foundation’; there are only mathematical jobs reasonably classified as ‘foundational’." I suspect your "universe of discourse" most closely aligns with Maddy's "Generous Arena", though I can imagine ways the alignment is not perfect.

@regehr@mastodon.social I just discovered that I missed the 10 year anniversary of your (wonderful) "Teaching C" blog post (https://blog.regehr.org/archives/1393)
Has anything changed in your thinking in the ensuing decade?

"...AI is really unusual as a field because it's named after its aspirational objective that has not, as yet, been reached. It's kind of like if economics had been named 'universal prosperity'..."
Intersting interview with historian of technology Thomas Haigh (whose been serializing a history of AI in CACM recently) about his forthcoming "short history" of AI as a brand.

@MartinEscardo also I maintain (and tell students) that learning to operate constructively/neutrally will make you better at operating classically when you want.

@irene@discuss.systems On a related note from the early days of computing, you might be interested to know that the Metropolis Algorithm (core to statistical computing), named after Nicholas Metropolis, ought arguably be attributed to Ariana Rosenbluth who actually did the work of programming it.

@chrisamaphone <3 Those years in the POP group (and living in Pittsburgh) were really something special! Most of the time I felt like the PhD who was a few years behind all the grad students 😬 . Good thing we were all in it together!
