Retro computing and games enthusiast.

Games industry coder by day, electronics + old computer tinkerer the rest of the time.

Currently taking a lengthy pause from the workforce to look after a family member, so posts will be less frequent. But I will still be around.

Working on a few retro games that will eventually come out (honest!)

Ah. Yes, that probably explains why this PC motherboard isn't working.

(Also, microscopes - how did we cope without them?)

Had an Atari mono monitor on its way from eBay, but too late realised it was being sent via Evri...

Well, as probably expected, it is now unable to be delivered due to damage. I wish I'd noticed before the item had been sent, I'd have paid more to get it with literally *anyone* else.

Another retro casualty of awful shipping companies :(

Driller for PC, 2007

I played this remake at the time, but I'm not sure how many people know about it compared to the original. Definitely worth a try.

Finally got around to looking into the full range of Grapevine Magazine disks for the Amiga, after finding those random issues in the A600's disk collection a while ago.

Issue 05 is the first to move from a simple greets style intro news disk into a full magazine, in Oct 91.

Feels a bit like a visiting a fascinating alien subculture, I never had access to any of this stuff at the time (and certainly no access to the BBSes they mention - I first got a modem around 1997/98).

@Gammitin Quite an FPS difference there though :D I need to dedicate a machine to Haiku, I may have a possible candidate... 🤔

Replying to
@Wintermute_BBS those audio caps are in a tight space behind the keyboard connector too, I ended up removing the socket when I did that originally. I find the actual chips from this era of Commodore are super reliable, not had one fail yet even when building ReAmigas from heat-removed chips from old boards. (The boards themselves are a different story...) Great to see your machine working again 😎

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I did something very like this in Elite Dangerous and that's all the proof I need that it will work.

Replying to
@Gammitin @eobet In fact, given I used to code for BeOS tools and apps, I will most likely dive in myself once it reaches R1. EDIT for clarity: *non-beta* R1.

Replying to
@eobet @Gammitin my experience when trying Haiku is that it is much slower on the same hardware, but to be fair to it, optimisation isn't presumably the priority until a full R1 release is complete - I'd hope after that, the devs will work on optimisation since one of the advantages of BeOS at the time was how well it ran on pretty ordinary machines.

Replying to
@Gammitin See if you can also install BeOS 4 or 5 on it, and compare them 😉 (From memory it probably won't like that gfx card... but otherwise it would be cool to see the differences)

@devlin not seen this particular issue myself, though just to check: do you have an original NMOS Z80 in the machine or a later CMOS variant? Thinking of the undocumented OUT (c),0 instruction issue, in case it's used for expansion cards in some way.

@devlin cool, if nothing else it's good to rule that out. Had me scratching my head for weeks that one!

Chucked a few comments into the winds of Bluesky. I don't expect replies. Still, nice to pop in now and again to see how the other half live.

This is great. We should all strive to provide actionable feedback, instead of just venting.

(Incidentally, I never go to forums these days either for much the same reason.)

@devlin@topspicy.social Indeed, it was working off and on a while back apparently, so I expect it was damaged and eventually burnt out.
