The uncomfortable work that we men, the ones who consider ourselves allies, is to call out and teach those boys around us. And fuck yes to gathering evidence to get the shit bags tossed.

It's 2026 and women are still asked to teach others to think a little bit and not be a prick

A while back I went to a tech meet-up and one of the talks was about being a woman in tech and I am finally ready to put into words why I sat through it so uncomfortably.

Prompted by @bramus@front-end.social' encouragement, I've written about popovers and the backdrop psuedo selector and how I think…it can lead to anti-patterns, it certainly did for me.

Really didn't think it would work, but my hotel offers free wifi for 30 minutes.

So I'm now running this command every 30 minutes then reconnecting:

```
sudo ifconfig en0 ether $(openssl rand -hex 6 | sed 's/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//')
```

I'm just rotating my mac address.

The sticker @matthiasott@mastodon.social grabbed for me at @btconf@mastodon.social now appropriately sits on my broken basket.

But (hopefully) it's not quite game over!

TIL on Firefox Android, if I double tap, but hold the second tap, then I drag my finger down and up to zoom on that particular point.

No idea if this is standard across all browsers, only just discovered it this weekend by accident.

The last minutes of the last #AllDayHey. Been an honour to speak (in 2019), but moreso, attend.

Huge thanks to @heypresents@mastodon.world and so many others for running it over the last decade.

It's interesting that Mastodon has strong support for accessibility (i.e. blocking posts without alt text - yes, I know bsky can be turned on too, slightly harder UX I think), yet on Masto, you can't add subtitles to video, whereas you can add a vtt file on bsky.

I wish I could make the Firefox View the thing that loads up when I load a new blank tab.

So much better than the history (which I'm sure just misses stuff).

Wondering if anyone that follows me has a work Palm Pilot (not emulator, I have those!). I'm after a (nice) photo of it running an old game I wrote. Appreciate the hardware is from a good few decades ago! (I'm sure I saw mine in the 2010s, just don't think I can sync it).

I do hate this guilt I feel when putting together code for publishing. I'm trying to make a demo to show how to use a web component (for open source), top is my efforts after 20 minutes. Below is the output from 2 lines of AI.

🤔 not thought about these in a while, but hadn't occurred to me that there isn't (that I could see) a Microformat for a bookmark - seems to fall into the same type as a h-entry which - in my head - is a full post.

I guess a bookmark is a micropost…but still…

I've hit a few blog posts that either write about having to add an AI statement, along the lines of: this site never uses AI for it's content, or "don't use AI for your blog posts". Which, yeah, obs. Has anyone actually seen this in the wild? Slop based blogs? Or even semi-slop?

We bought the boy a (2nd hand) Pixel Watch 2 (he does lots of running, but doesn't enjoy carrying a phone - plus doesn't really work for swimming) - and fuck me, being 14 really puts a spanner in the works.

Part of me wants to write it up, but not sure it's that useful.

Short version: just…don't?

I keep thinking a native command palette would be a superb new web feature (and yes, web components), mostly because of the universal accessibility.

But then…how on mobile? Maybe browser chrome would trigger it open? Not sure what the mobile UX looks like.

Such naivety that Starmer thinks he can have any kind of conversation with social media bosses to have any kind of impact at all. He's literally a fly to shit in this scenario.

These sites are monetising children and knowingly create addictive algorithms.

I think the answer is no (because I keep testing different variations of it), but(!), is it possible to write a CSS selector based on a pseudo element's position. ie. `dialog::backdrop + div { color: red }` (bad example, but should give you an idea).

Equally is `:has(::backdrop)` a thing?

Enjoying the **last** #AllDayHey.

The biggest thing I get from events, that I can't get from anywhere else: people who care about the things I care about.

I'm always nervous attending, worrying I'll be alone, and it never goes that way.

But it's always okay.

See you at the next event, right?

I don't quite understand why installing an extension on Netlify means it's then installed on ALL projects.

I've got a few projects that are achingly old, and as such, the extension actually prevents the build from finishing (and I really don't want to update it because it's in full autonomous mode)

I might have just managed to spin up a new AWS server, and have a full deploy chain running in 30 minutes. I've never had an AWS server live deployed from `main` branch from github actions.

It's always been an extra I've had to pay for/non-AWS services.

Now I've got a UI that helps me debug too.

@janl@narrativ.es on that extra link, that was on both sides - I just got paste happy. I sort of understand where you're coming from. For me, it's that for "bare" posts, I currently going to both sites and posting twice (when I remember). What I want to get to is that I can post once and it deseminiates out to bsky & masto. I used to have an android app that did it, but it was clunky (and I don't tend to use my phone during the day time/desk work).
